Make my room more impressive
Comments (127)Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Enjoy experimenting untill you get something you're happy with - good luck!...See MoreLiving Room- Keep or Change Style?
Comments (8)Thanks both. At the moment I only have one couch which is the same colour as what is there currently, and a few different rugs in grey and beige colours. I might copy the mirror that is currently there and a similar lamp as I think they look well. Was thinking maybe a clear glass coffee table in the middle over a beige rug? I guess modern would be my preffered style but Im pretty open!...See MoreNavy and gold hieroglyphic fabric on large corner sofa...
Comments (9)At the moment all your stuff is concentrated at one side of he room making it cluttered and bare at the same time. Pictures need to go at eye height, so maybe get a simple shelf built above the sofa at eye height for some knick knacks. Somehow your pictures seem very high up on the wall. You could cluster them together above the sofa maybe? You can still have your mantel but with maybe a better-selected range of bits on it. Agree that some shelving might be good in the alcoves but not above the line of the top of those pictures. I would have gone for a much darker colour for the walls (like navy blue) because the sofa would have blended in a bit more and it would look luxurious against the dark background. Plus dark colours give your stuff an instant quality upgrade. (I always say it makes my sh*t look like stuff) Sorry that's unhelpful as you've obviously made those decisions!!...See MoreLiving room
Comments (12)I think black, cream and gold is quite a classic combination unless you wanted more colour? Perhaps a side table or low console to the right of the fire but keep the profile lower than the fire. I would change the mirror for a larger one and add something tallish on the LHS, agree re painting skirts, would do these in the ŵall colour though to maximise ŵall height and also paint the door. Perhaps a glass coffee table with a rug under the sofas? I would keep the rug similar in tone to the floor. You could also try arranging cushions either 2/3 on one side with just one on the other to move away from a traditonal look but do bring in the gold and pattern. You could try just a grasscloth on the fire ŵall. I would also add art. If you choose black frames keep the frame fairly thin. Also agree re tv unit....See MoreJoan Head
