how do I dress the rest of the room with such a bold pattern?? I've gone for lemon walls and white voile curtains with a gold thread throughout and a neutral rug. My husband made the TV stand in a mantle style for displaying my knickknacks and photos. Any suggestions???

Comments (28)Ok - currently saving money on carpet; already have pool table and lamp for this area. What about creating different seating areas in the room. You said there are built ins? Computer station? Family using this space. Here is MY suggestion: I would use MORE than one rug - each for specific areas of this room. You can have the sisal berbers made to fit - and I think ONE large one would actually end up being a little messy as this would be huge - and could get off bounds? (out of shape) You could have these bound and use them to create different areas within the larger space? Is that a gold or a taupe or beige color between the red pattern? Here is my suggestion : the opposite side of the color wheel tones down the other - since this is a red color - how about using a very soft BLUE/GREY on the ceiling? Or a very soft Grey/Blue? And a very soft taupe or mocha color on the walls - something which is within the SAME tonal family as the NON-red portion of your rug? This should go nicely with your brown sofa and the sisal or other type berbers? YES - get one larger one (RUG for the area in front of the TV . . . large enough to go from the baseboard area - to completely under your sofa? BTW - LAZYBOY makes beuatiful furniture - and you do NOT have to get the plumped and rolled ubiquitious leather chair. OR, I can personally, highly recommend FurnitureLa South, in Hickory N.C. - and they will deliver for FREE! Love that! They have a style for everyone and this is where they actually make the furniture. They sell ALL manufacturers at cost. Well not Lane or Ethan Allen. My one last thought - since this is such a very large space - I would also get a rather substantial and DARK drapery rod using finials - and extend the width of the drapes to help balance the room on the other side with the windows. Since you have built ins on the other side - this will help balance the space visually. IF you do not like the color of the fixture material on the pool table light - you can get any finish you desire in a rustoleium paint - I would consider spray painting this something in the neighborhood of a oil rubbed bronze; or something with more of a dark patina? This would also help balance out the room and bring focus into the space you are utilizing - the rest will fade away. SO - ceiling paint a must; paint the trim or add a more traditional trim - at least 5 inches in depth; TWO separate rugs - not one big one - at least one for now for the TV area; Extend your drapes and raise them almost to the ceiling to help balance the room; Darker drape rod - and double the fabric for your drapes to make them look fuller; Spray paint a darker finish on to the pool table fixture. Use a tone of paint on the wall which will go with the tone of the other color of your rug! Another thought: You consider finding an old wooden bench - or church pew ??? that would be fun; you could place facing into the space around the pool table area? Comments (22)I second Carolyn's motion to check out IKEA for a media cabinet although I feel you will need something around 30-36" tall with this particular TV. It appears to me that you have two matching loveseats or small sofas. Is this correct? In any scenario, if you want cozy, several have already offered thoughts that will help. First, although ideal, I do not feel that your cocktail table has to center on both upholstered pieces. You could center it on the fireplace and work from there, whether parallel or perpendicular. I agree that the upholstery needs to come forward and that the two large pieces should create an L formation. the chair should go to the left of the fireplace, at an angle. I know: Now it is partially in front of the TV. If the TV is on an appropriately scaled media piece, this allows TV viewing over the chair back from all seats in the room except the chair. At risk of being presumptuous, I would suggest that the TV need not be visible from EVERY seat in the room. Greys are definitely hot right now and I love them, but choose wisely. Greys combined with this intense red and black can plunge you squarely back into the 80's. Consider very warm greys, mocha's or green-greys. When you land your color, paint the walls, out onto the underside of the tray and onto the front facing edge of the tray all the same color. This will enhance the architecture of the tray and unify it as an architectural UNIT, enhancing the volume and dimensionality of this feature. As for the pale blue, I must say, I don't understand that at all in this room. (No offense mforr) Now, add a texture to the highest central section of ceiling. Think, grass cloth, faux finish or just a deeper version of the wall color. I agree with Carolyn that the panels are covering too much of your window and that you should consider losing the tie-backs, which are a bit cutesy. In a perfect world, or if you are up for it, I would replace them with something visually lighter, something with a large open airy pattern. I would make the cocktail table metal and glass or wood and glass and modern, even sculptural. (maybe a Noguchi repro?...) Large scaled art on the long wall, as suggested earlier and some greenery. Comments (16)Beautiful fabric. I'm glad you need to keep them. But the rugs I posted were based on what I thought was more of a gold undertone to the background. But I think -- assuming you do want to change the rug -- you need to shop for traditional rugs, looking for those that will blend with the three colours in the curtains. Most will have additional colour/s in them, which will then help you choose your cushions and throws based on that palette. For instance, with the first rug above, if its border colours did tone with your curtains, you would have the bonus of that lovely blue/grey to play with too. With your current rug you could pick up the grey, as well as the plummy colours and beiges that tone so well with your curtains -- and do I see green in there as well? Curse monitors, they play with colours and confuse one's eyes. Still, they make this possible. When you have sorted out your basic colours -- and I think either the blue/grey or a subtle green would work very well as an addition in your room -- that gives you a basis for selecting cushions. I would start with a big, soft-textured cushion for the sofa in the background colour of your curtains. And then there's my favourite thing -- art for your walls. I'd love to see a big piece of art above the gorgeous stove. And then, and then .... pick a chandelier? Enough for now. Back to work....See MoreBríd McShane

9 years agoPaint - the yellow doesn't for me. I would go light grey e.g. Just walnut by dulux.
Sofa - add a throw and cushions in greys, mix of textures/sizes. Poss one clashing print and a navy one.
Tv unit - take items off, it is too cluttered. Also remove items around it.
Art work - keep until you can see if it works with new scheme. I would have opted for something more contemporary.
Behind sofa - perhaps a picture wall of white frames and black and white photos, with an odd colour one thrown in if you like.
Lamp - add a cool floor lamp.

9 years agoIf you're brave enough, these colours, pattern and this kind of mirror on the chimney breast would look amazing.
If you're set on the mirror going on the wall behind the couch, I'd go for a rich gold chimney breast, and navy walls either side of the breast.
