Resurfacing deck questions

I'm replacing the wood surface with trex on my deck, and I have a couple questions.

1: should I power wash the sub structure before I put down the trex?

2: should I be very concerned about the joists that split at the ends? Do I need to do anything with them? Or just leave them be?

Hi Jason, it wouldn't hurt to power wash although its probably not necessary. If you do then let it dry out afterwards and treat the tops of the joists with copper green. The tops are the first thing that goes and brushing on some copper green is an easy step.

If you have a rotted joist then you should chop it out and replace. The splitting tops at the ends of the joists are not a big deal however you should make sure that there is a Simpson connector at each each location where two members meet. To connect a 2x8 joist to a ledger or a rim use a LSU28 or an L70. Make sure you get your connectors in Zmaz or they'll rot.

Thank you for the detailed reply. It was really helpful. I ended up powerwashing and it came out good. Those supports were in as well. And I didn't worry so much about the joists, and they seem to be fine.

Hi Antoinette I too live in Ireland in a Semi Detached. My husband who's the one with green fingers has transformed our garden into an oasis you wouldn't think we lived in a housing estate. You might start with cleaning the slabs. You could change the edging tile with a contrasting one to set it off. Use different sizes and colours of pots. A seating area in one section. Use lots of different colours and plants which are ok to grow in pots. Just seeing all the colours come to life in Spring and Summer will cheer you up. Here are some photos that were taken at the end of summer last year the leaves have started falling from the trees. Oh yeah still have the clothes line up too.

No, ask away :-) I'm not a pro though, just kind of passionate about design and interiors and all that :-) Great cabinet. I'm really not opposed to mixing metals. You'll get a more eclectic mix. It is the result of going with what you love and not with what you think goes with something else. And that will give your interior your own personal style. Matter of taste. Some people really don't like it. Others do :-) Go for a fairly large coffee table. I would think at least 100 cm wide. Tape (news) paper together to the size of the coffee table you like and lay that on the floor. It will give you an idea about the scale in your room. You need it to be easily reachable from the sofas, since you have these high armrests. And your room can take a large table. If you can't find a large one you like, you can also think about putting together 4 smaller square ones for example. The one with the metal base (I took two from the Soul Lifestyle site) is on the smallish side. The black one is larger. Round fits nicely with the shape of your sofas. Not sure if I mocked up the sizes correctly, but I think the lovely side table is too small. The lamp is about 70 cm tall (again, I guestimated the size), but it does look small on that low table. I would follow the curving line of the lovely brick sett edging to the beds and have the same brick edging whatever flag stone you choose . This way you can continue the lovely curve and have your patio wider/ deeper on whichever side you choose to have the table and bbq. Grass the rest...I 'very just seen the date on this question. You'very probably done it by now, lol

' Decking design and new entrance'

We have been living here 2 years and desperately want to complete our home. We want to match a new extension onto the existing property. To the front on the left we want a single storey extension. This will have decking coming out of the patio doors , which will have a glass border and there will be sapce underneath for a an apartment. The idea is to wrap the decking to make our new entrance so that we can get rid of our ugly steps up to the house. Our question is how we match the look of the house with appropriate materials/glass/stone...? We are open to a very modern look and would appreciate to get some feedback. If anyone has done somthing similar we would love to see pictures.

We are also doing the same... Our substructure looked a bit better than this, and we took it all out and replaced with new. We figured there was no sense in spending big $$ on the deck portion with a poor foundation

Our substructure is pretty old, I gave it a powerwashing and it did look a little better.

Also, I bought a "deck wrecker" tool and it made progress much much faster. It was $130 from amazon, and worth about ten times that.

I have the new boards all cut and in place, just having some issues getting the screws in. I wish I had gone with the grooved boards and hardware. I'll post up a pic when it's finished.
