Have you ever had a piece of furniture reupholstered?
Say you have an armchair, that may be loved but is looking a little worse for wear - is your instinct to try and salvage it by reupholstering it, or to throw it away and invest in a replacement, of either the same chair or a more modern incarnation? Does "refresh by recycling" or "renew by replacing" more accurately describe you? Or do you in fact strive for the shabby chic, a little run down look, not looking for refreshment through reupholstery or replacement?

7 years agoOnce I got over the shock of how much it costs to re-cover a sofa, I was really pleased to recycle rather than dump my old sofa. It went from rabbit-nibbled red to luxurious ivory velvet.

Comments (36)I would also definitely go white if the windows are on the green wall. Will be much more natural to tie the accent wall with the stark wht contrasting walls. Always a very chic contemporary look. Also very relaxing as opposed to the treatments standing out when you already have your standout feature- the green accent wall. Great white bed you ordered! Then I love all the blue/green/ silver accent advice. I did a similar room in purples/greys/ whites and we used great posted prints of florals with a little oriental flair in nice big mats w frames. You could do florals or nice big botanicals in greens would be very fresh and modern!! Comments (39)Latest update! Made a few changes to the book cabinet to the left of the fireplace. Added chrome legs to match the legs on the tv cabinet and added doors to the top half to try to make it look less cluttered. The lighting in the photos isn't great but hopefully you get the idea.Am quite pleased with the result. Comments (6)Hi Emmie, My only tip would be to attach your custom-build structure to the wall, one way or the other, to avoid... tip-ping :) If I can picture what you intend to do correctly, you will need to anchor it to the wall. It doesn't involve structural changes necessarily, just a few screws into the wall studs. Other than that, make sure you use the right materials / thickness to support what you intend to display (ie, the shelf for the TV should be thicker than a shelf used for just 1 or 2 picture frames). Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa....See Morebagpuss2
7 years agoThe two armchairs belonged to my late mum. They were reupholstered by The Old Schoolhouse Latheron, and the tweed for the mid century chair came from Kingcraig Fabrics in Brora.

7 years agoI bought the armchair and footstool separately, both from charity shops and had them recovered. Its my spot to put my feet up and read.

7 years agoThis chair belonged to my husband's grandmother. We've had it for years. It's very comfortable and the right size for the room so we had it
recovered (along with the Ottoman behind it) when we decorated. Not a cheap option, but we are pleased with the results.

I have just reupholstered a large stool that was in need of some TLC - easy to do and what a difference it makes matching my new sofa. I used tacks to tidy up underneath with the leftover fabric which kept everything nice and neat.

7 years agoWe've had one of our sofas re-upholstered it was too comfortable to change!! We've also managed to collect 10 of these G plan E Gomme butterfly back chairs (1950's) and restored them and we were lucky to find this footstool down the tip one day :)

7 years agoIt's a good way of getting what you want which wouldn't otherwise exist, especially if you are buying new, the mainstream stuff has such a limited "play it safe" choice.
I do small stuff myself with a staplegun and a bit of hand-stitching
I had the frame powder coated and covers made for the cushions on this over twenty years ago, (Corbusier would probably not have approved) lets just say my taste has changed a bit since then.

It's not cheap to get a piece upholstered properly but if the chair fits the space, has sentimental meaning and is structurally comfortable (the stuffing can always be fixed but the proportion of the frame is another matter) then it is worth giving it many more years life.

7 years agoI spent long hours at traditional upholstery classes to recover my prie dieu chair. Never thought I would end up washing, declumping & drying horse hair!
