Original wood floors of old silk mill. Area rug or keep bare?

Our little office is located in a beautifully restored old silk mill. We love the original wood floors but with the 15' high ceiling and white walls we thought we might need a little more color so we added a rug. We're not sure if we want to keep the wood floor bare, keep the rug, or switch it out for another. What do you suggest? Please let us know!

Aside from the style or look of the space, the area rug will help to dampen sounds and not make the space echo. Plus it looks like it's small enough that you still get to enjoy that beautiful flooring!

Thanks Rustica! You're right about the sounds. We haven't complained about echoes since we put it down. Would you suggest we keep it red or maybe try a different color, shape or maybe a pattern?

The trim in your rooms is outstanding. To "tie the rooms together", the one thing I would do is install chair rail the same color as the existing trim. The horizontal lines of chair rail will move the eye around the room and into the next room creating a flow. Chair rail is relatively inexpensive, easy to install and would be wonderful compliment to your existing beautiful trim.

Latest update! Made a few changes to the book cabinet to the left of the fireplace. Added chrome legs to match the legs on the tv cabinet and added doors to the top half to try to make it look less cluttered. The lighting in the photos isn't great but hopefully you get the idea.Am quite pleased with the result. Am still trying to decide on art for over the fireplace, keep changing my mind but considering getting this canvas (see picture).

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

That is true alright, though even with a patterned carpet they usually keep a mat for people to wipe their feet on by the door, or if people like to remove boots or shoes when entering ( not that common here) but great idea. The trouble with the patterned carpet was if anything fell on the floor you could hardly find it !!

Well, that depends on how much traffic the floor gets and how often the office is cleaned.

To mask dirt, leaves, and other debris that can come in on shoes, a pattern or darker color would be ideal. But since the office already has a lot going on with furniture, plants, desktop items, etc., any solid color would help it to not look overly busy. I think a lighter color (that would match or compliment the light wall color) would help to brighten the room as a whole, make it more inviting, and it would make the wood floor really pop. But again--if it would get noticeably dirty, lighter may not be the way to go.

I'd keep it bare. It will look good tho either way so if you want a area rug then put one. Do you know what kind of wood it is? Looks gorgeous!!!

Awesome flooring! I would suggest a round rug in a different color. Maybe something with texture or a pop of color, but nothing too distracting.

The floorings great! I would suggest leaving it bare but putting some color on the wall.

Thanks Gerety! Since we make grow lights for interior design we might keep the floor bare and hang plants such as ivy along the wall to give our office that clean and green look. We'll post pictures!

Minjeeah, unfortunately we did not find out what wood it is yet. No one seems to be sure. Selecta Flooring, thank you very much. We love it. And KT tile, is there any pattern or color you would suggest?
