Update Green Granite in Kitchen

Moving into a new apartment, and I am not into the style of the kitchen at all.
At this time we're not able to replace the cabinets or countertops - but I would like to find a way to make the space feel a little more modern.

Considering - Painting the cabinets/replacing hardware; replacing the backsplash; replacing the pendant lights.

Would love suggestions for colors. I usually love white cabinets, but I think the stark whit of the backsplash right now does not pair well with the counters. Maybe a cream or a grey instead?

The backsplash is terrible. Granite splash with tile is dated and ugly. I would remove the entire backsplash and go with a simple, not textured, full tile splash. White cabinets would match well with the granite. Changing the cabinet doors will help to modernize the space.

I think the hardware, lighting, counter stools might be enough change to make it more contemporary. The wood cabinets are nice and it might be expensive to repaint, so I would try the other fixes first and see if that helps.

I agree with everything said so far. Would suggest you get built in book shelvers on both sides of fireplace, lift tv into a slot it fits perfectly into (make sure you have power on both sides). Then it will disappear more rather than fight with fireplace as focal point. I am always disappointed with mirrors over fireplaces, they become dark, are to high to reflect much. Plus then you have three rectangles fighting for center stage. I'd say very colorful artwork instead. Wonder if you can reorient tv where the big chairs are so both tv and fireplace are addressed? Color, maybe you should decide on furniture first?

Hi PCmom, sstarr and lefty47. Thanks a million for the comments and views. I'm taking it all on board. PCmom I like the frosted glass idea but I think it will block too much light. We are actually thinking of doing this though in our front sitting room as the window is floor to ceiling. Love the recycled lumber idea and it looks great in the photo - think my husband is hell bent on steel shelving though. sstarr - I'm gonna have a look at your profile pics now but I don't think we will have enough wall space for floor to ceiling pantry. lefty47 we are keeping the appliances for now. It is only the oven - its not the prettiest but its functional and we will most definitely get a new fitted one in the future. There are a few other pictures there of the room around and the left wall - can you not see them? If not I can try and add them again. I'm glad you liked the toilet paper. It took me ages to decide where to place that! What does everyone think about colours of the cabinets? I think we might go for a neutral tone on the wall (unless anyone can visualise anything better?) and either with the steel shelving or possibly the recycles ,lumber idea from PCmom? Yeah, the backsplash is the only thing odd to me -- the rest feels very current, other than that people are obsessed with white cabinets instead of wood right now. I think updated pendants and hardware would go 75% of the way, the backsplash (including the 4" of granite, if possible) another 20%, and really you'd get very little "update" by painting, just a change of style.

Thank you all. I do think that the backsplash is the worst part. (It's one of those peel-and-stick things, sop should be easy to remove) Maybe replace it with a grey tile?

Agree with your thought about white cabinets; something that stark will really emphasize how green the countertops are! Instead, pull out a neutral shade found in the countertop and make that your cabinet color. You could slide down a color or two on the paint swatch and go a little darker if you wanted, since the existing wood is pretty dark and is a nice contrast against the pale walls. When you update the backsplash, pop off the 4" granite lip on the wall and take the tile all the way to the countertop. Something simple, maybe a 3x9 subway tile?
