How did you deal with the thermostat on the dividing wall, and how was the heat control tied into the new open concept?

The sketch below demonstrates the scenario that was the case of this
particular project. There are a number of ways to handle removing walls
with existing electrical. Always have a certified electrician do any
relocation of electrical power.

The goal is always to maintain power in a safe way AND always
keeping any junctions or joints in line accessible in a junction box for future
work. It is unsafe and illegal to enclose junction boxes without some kind of
accessibility (ie, they have to be properly wired in a junction box and can’t
be dry-walled over hiding this joint point) In our example the junction box is
fastened to a rafter in the attic and can be accessed via the attic space.

With a sliding door, you can have each side different to match the style of the room it faces. Here are some ideas that, believe it or not, are done with sharpies on flat surfaces. I can envision a "fireplace" on the lounge side. On the dining room side, you could do the "double door" look, by putting half on the door, and half on the wall next to the door. So when the door is closed, it looks like a pair of doors, but when the door is slid open it looks like only one door (but it's the wall!) I added the 3rd picture just because I think it's so cool. I believe the only "real" thing in the room is the glass table/desk, and the filing cabinet.

I think you're right to change your plans tbh, I think pic 1 and 3 would work. Another option is a suspended woodburner. It's obviously not a divide but it gives you the break in the ceiling so acts as one. The first one attached is from fireplaceproductsUK. The other 2 are just images from leotrippi and homedesignht to show how they can act to divide a room. A much more expensive option is a glass fireplace, this is from acucraft fireplaces. I'm not sure how easy it is to find UK manufacturers/suppliers though. Alternatively you can just break the room with furniture layout and ceiling lights. The lights if hung properly ie at differing heights, clusters etc along with floor lamps will stop that cavernous feel. I can't obviously see the plan but if you're really set on a divide, and they are great!, you could set it off a side wall rather than down the centre of the room.
