What colour rug?

As part of a whole house renovation we have done up our small front room to be the "grown-ups TV room". We have very patterned wallpaper on the chimney, a dusty teal coloured sofa (for want of a better description) and orange/ red cushions. The side table and TV unit are oak as is the floor. We are getting white plantation shutters fitted in a few weeks.

The floor is cold and there is a bigger gap between the sofa and TV than I imagined there would be. I need a rug but with such busy wallpaper and contrasting couch/ cushions I am unsure what colour(s) to go for. To add to it the family room is next door with sliding pocket doors; it is white walls, oak fireplace beam and oak floors too but has a large stripey rug with a range of colours including teal, orange, sage, and a deep pink.

I am thinking I need to get a plain teal rug - will that be boring? Is there something more adventurous I could go for without it all clashing? Ideas very much appreciated.

Hi. The room's looking good! I think you're going to lose the impact of the sofa if you go for teal unless it's a patterned one with white etc. You could go for a sisal in golden tones (will help the floor space look bigger as there's little contrast) or I think a pale-mid grey would work. If you want colour I think a chartreuse would work

It turned out lovely. That wallpaper is so pretty. Have you considered a round rug? It was my first thought. A soft purple or a neutral sand/beige?
And I quite like how the Esprit flower rug looks in the collage.

Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Enjoy experimenting untill you get something you're happy with - good luck!

Hello! I like your mood board-the colours are very nice. i think round swivel coffee table may look good and also be practical next to corner sofa. No angles - no bruises!) The carpet will bright up the space and will match your zig zag cushions. Both products are from Dwell.

I want to paint my kitchen walls inclusive of where the presses are so the wall with the window and the wall to the right. The island is a sage colour. I am thinking a very light heather colour so the kitchen will tie in with the living room (pic2) & get a rug for under the finish table to link the two. Any opinions? PS. I'm thinking of getting a yellow rig for the living room under the poof & front two legs of each of the couches

I think the heather and sage tones will work well together. Putting rugs under dining tables isn't that practical for clearing up if you have kids or grand kids. I also like the sound of the yellow, but it would have to be very pale. Grey might work better, good luck x

What fabulous colours, they look amazing together. The chartreuse suggestion for your rug would work but the flower rug is so pretty.

Thanks you - chartreuse is a new colour/ word for me and I love it! However google is not having much luck with chartreuse rugs that are still for sale or not £1000+!

Would you say is is more green or yellow a colour as it seems to vary online what comes up? I wondered about these which are from a company local to me so I can see before I buy (though looks like they do custom rugs too if I got stuck) - greener or yellower ones though?

It is a lovely word, it's named after a French liquer which is made as either a green chartreuse or a yellow one so some are more biased to green and some more to yellow! I think you can go either way. There's not much that comes up if you google for chartreuse I agree other than the likes of designers guild etc but if you go on the rug websites and choose green for example you will find a number are actually that colour. I think I prefer your first rug.

Can we see a bit more of the room?

Space between sofa and TV will seem far smaller when you have a rug and coffee table.

Check the eBay dealers for 100% cotton rugs. Usually wouldn't suggest that, but they are new rugs at cheap prices for the size and they come in a load of colours, you might even find chartreuse!

Any rug that could tie your colours together will be more expensive and risk looking busy in tandem with your other elements.

Hi Jen,

You have a nice room here and I like your tv unit! I would actually suggest going for a monochrome rug in a contrasting pattern to your wallpaper, because it will create an interesting look. Don't be afraid of using clashing patterns!

To show you a monochrome rug like suggested above... (I don't think it works with the rug in the next room, also not sure I like it with the wallpaper. Find the contrast rather harsh.)

rug overload! though now thinking orange looks best - thanks for the photos carolina. Though room is currently full of a very large christmas tree as living room in the old victorian flat was 26ft!!

I think you should stay away from patterned rugs as plain will make the wall to stand out and do something for the room. And I believe this is your goal. I liked the one Carolina suggested Burnt Orange. I think round rug will make it more interesting but it depends on the room shape - if it allows for round rug I mean. I would also put a white sheep skin on the armrest of the couch.

I think I like the duck egg rug best. Keeps it light and fresh looking. But the burnt orange looks good too. Hope you'll keep us posted on what you decide.

Arrrgghh! Was all set to head to a rug shop tomorrow, cushions and wallpaper in hand, but have just measured the floor and there is an issue - the room is too small! Or too narrow to be precise - a 230cm rug would fit well but 160cm width is just too wide for the door to open.

would a round rug work in the space? I am not sure. Other possible is getting a narrower rug made to measure...

Just to show you how a square or a round rug would work. Don't pay too much attention to the colours or the sizes, it's just about the shape. You could use paper or painters tape and do a real mock up yourself. I've placed the rectangular rug under the sofa, which could be an idea? (I still think a round rug works, but it's not everyone's cup of tea)

Thank you Carolina, that is so helpful. We have our Christmas tree up now so hard to see exactly where the rug would be. I may have to leave it until the tree is down to get the exact position and therefore size. I used to have an IKEA round rug in a spare room - it may still be in the garage so I could try it out.

Will you be placing a rectangular / square coffee table in front of your sofa like In the photo ? If so I would be inclined to put a square or rectangular rug . I think it looks fine coming from under the sofa . I have a large rug in my bedroom coming from under the bed , saw the same in ikea showroom .

No coffee table planned. We have a funky side table which is sort of triangular with rounded edges.

I am now thinking I will get a made to measure burnt orange round rug...

Carolina, thanks, I actually think round shape works more friendly I think. Ideally, would be good to get sharp cut of a rug that it looks as round cut in two. not sure if it exist though.

It was advertised as grey but actually has a teal-ish tone to it. It's not right next to the wallpaper so I think it's okay.

Hi, thanks for the update. It's a daring combination, and probably not for everyone. I think I quite like it though. It's a bit crazy. Think you could have gone safer with a lighter colour or a plainer rug. But this is interesting and different.
