Countertop argument- granite? no granite?

Please give me your opinion. I do not like granite-seems it is too busy for me. Husband doesn't like quartz- says it looks plastic like/cheap. Any other suggestions? Cabinets will be creme w/ dark umber glaze. This is not a very formal house, pretty traditional. Thanks for your help!

I just put in absolute black granite in a honed surface. Didn't want busy or shiny and it's perfect so far.

We have just done our kitchen with caeserstone tops. It looks better than granite for me. Lots more colour choice.

Maybe soapstone? It has a matte finish and is not at all busy, good for traditional, less formal kitchens. I don't like the busy patterns and high gloss of granite either, but I like having a natural stone. Or you can do a honed absolute black granite, which looks very much like soapstone. Not at all busy.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

Or real quartz. But there are many different types of granite. Some less busy than others and some not busy at all. Lots of options out there.

I have black in my whole kitchen and love it can't go wrong with granite, I plan on re doing all my bathrooms and putting granite there also but considering a brown and tan color there the only problem with the black is you can see any little crumb ect on counters washing the kitchen counters alot a lighter would hide more,

I agree with Carolyn. There are lots of options. Granite does come in solid black, for ex. and there are tons of options with quartz which is (engineered) stone. The plastic material is solid surface; we often call it Corian. Soapstone is a great choice, too, but it will require maintenance. You'll be able to see and compare all the surfaces, except soapstone, at Home Depot.

Ironwood, is slate used on countertops? I've never seen that but like the idea.

Above I said real quartz, I should have said Quartzite - it's a bit harder than granite but has similar veining to marble. It's lovely. Worth considering if the budget allows.

Granite in solid black shows every spec so if you are not a neat freak I would go for something lighter.

I have granite in Absolute Black, and I don't think it shows everything...in fact, I think it disguises spots. You may want to do some more research on the types of natural stone...marble, quartzite and soapstone are all great choices depending on your budget and the level of maintenance you're willing to do.
