New tile floor and bathroom fixtures, what to do you start with first?

Hi,

I would like to replace the old tile floor, old sink, old light fixture and old tub and shower unit with new items. My question is, do you replace the tile floor last?

In terms of actual laying it, you usually do the tub and then the tile and then the vanity, etc., on the finished floor.

In terms of picking, start with the vanity, then tile, or maybe the two in tandem.

Hi apreston0,

Here is the order you should take in remodeling your bathroom:

1. Demo out the tub/shower unit.

2. Demo out the sink and floor.

3. Remove the fixture.

4. Install a new tub/shower unit.

5. Install a new floor.

6. Install a new vanity.

7. Install a new countertop, sink and backsplash.

8. Install a new fixture.

In summary, no you do not do the floor tile last. More like the middle.

Mary, I am very glad to hear from you. I think of you often. It hurt me terribly when that unthoughtful person said what she said. I can only imagine how it must have hurt you. I would love to see how you have decorated for Christmas. I am almost certain there are differences between how our 2 countries do it. http://houzz.com/photos/3642990 This link kind of demonstrates the use of mosaics and the mirror idea I thought may be cool. Obviously they are vertical but I think it would work either way. Any pics of your tiles? I have seen your other post and know your suite is 'traditional' but another thing to consider I guess is the cost of the mosaics. £££ using lots may mean a big dent in your budget.

I'm pretty sure they will have been put in to provide a non-combustable zone behind and around the stove. We are about to install a wood burning stove and the installation instructions specify an area that needs to be heat resistant. Removing or even painting them behind the stove would be difficult and potentially dangerous. I would either paint the rest of the chimney breast a dark green to reduce the impact of the tiles, or add a fire surround (checking with the manufacturer or a reputable installer about clearance) and some painted tongue and groove cladding over the chimney breast depending on your preferred style.

Tastes change with time - and fashion promotes the latest trends so that eventually what ever you choose could look dated... It's what keeps business going - so maybe only tile where it's needed... Personally, if I were choosing for myself, I'd choose plain white in the largest tile with absolute minimum grout as I hate when the grout looks old / grubby as always happens . Then I'd add colour with towels that could be changed to give a different feel when I fancied a change if you see what I mean ! That's my taste - yours could be totally different ! There's loads of beautiful pics on Houzz - best idea is to do a bathroom search and see what appeals to you ! Then think is it practical ? Can I afford it ? Will it suit the house ! If you are doing the floor too - adding underfloor heating is a lovely way to keep an ambient temperature and- let's face it - it's kinder on bare feet too !!

Thank you very much....I'd like to be able to use the bathroom while having the repairs done if at all possible.
