Need help choosing the tile option transitioning from wood
We have to change the wooden flooring in the kitchen because of water damage. We would like to replace it with tiles. Any suggestions on what kind of tiles go with this wood? Is wood look tile that's pretty close to the current flooring a good idea? Thanks in Advance!

Comments (21)You should have a professional installer in your area take a look at your home so you can discuss what end result you are wanting. You may need to use an engineered wood. This is still an all wood product and is much more dimensionally stable than solid wood. This is a huge advantage if you are in an older home or in the midwest where humidity levels can drastically change from season to season. A solid wood will cup or curl if humidity and moisture levels are not managed. Your installer should do a moisture test before installation to make sure the installation does not fail. All warranties will be voided if this step is not taken. Also, your transitions will need to be considered. Is the new wood floor going to butt up to tile, carpet, or vinyl? The height difference in the two products will need to be taken into consideration. You will have a greater selection of thicknesses in the engineered woods. Engineered wood should be several plys, all wood. If you choose a solid wood, the hand scraped versions are fantastic for a high traffic area with children. Comments (21)My understanding: You didn't find any problem functionally, but you feel this looks old & need some brightness & change in this. My advise: 1). Remove towel rod, shift it next to tub or behind closet & have full length mirror, which will make your space double & reflect natural light as well thus makes the space more bright. 2). Get couple of plants (small plants or bush type or creepers which doesn't occupy much space on floor but grows vertically). 3). Get some artifacts made from bright colored glass, can flower vase or wall hangings or glass tiles etc, these can be of yellow or Bright Orange color these are to be hung on walls opp to mirror or pasted(3M tape both side glued) if you are using tiles. 4). Get a mat of same color as artifacts & place between tub & closet. these all are easily done by yourself. Comments (4)Here is a "stone look" Armstrong product linoleum that will not compete with all the color of backsplash. It is slightly darker than the cabinets which will ground the room nicely. Comments (5)If you are doing in-floor heating (hydronic heating) I would go with tile. If you are not, go with wood. That's from the energy and comfort perspective. It's OK to look at the two options and choose the one that's most attractive. Don't feel like you need to optimize for energy with every decision. Also, both flooring materials are reflective acoustically. Plan your other surfaces accordingly, or you'll drive yourself batty with echoes....See Morefancypearl

7 years agoDepends upon the thickness of your wood. If your wood is 3/8"-5/16" it would be wise to use a ceramic or porcelain tile product. If your wood is 1/2"-3/4" It would be best to use a natural stone, preferably travertine due to the different gauges you can purchase. If you can purchase the same thickness product you can get by without having a pesky T molding between the two.
Personally I like natural stone or tiles that mimic the natural stone look. I would contrast the color of the wood, slightly more towards the color of your walls.

7 years agoHi Malliyugan. As a designer and a flooring specialist, I would not recommend installing wood look tile when it is adjacent to real wood floors. Instead, I would suggest a large travertine square tile, laid on the diagonal. It would give you enough contrast with the wood floors, and still remain a neutral backdrop for your cabinets. This picture happens to be in a bathroom, but it certainly would look great in a kitchen. Hope this helps!
