I am wondering how the Paralam is wearing even if it is stained and has couple of polyurethane coats?..Looks like strands might rip?I have used paralam beams for structural things...
Hello, the paralam wear very well. Smaller and thinner pieces of wood chips sometimes pop up, or flake off, however, a small amount of sanding and new clear coat in the area usually takes care of it. Haven't had any big chunks come loose. The wood is usually pine, so it is soft and can dimple under small heavy load like a high heal. But even that has been very minor on the stairs I have used paralam as treads. I've also used glu-lam and they show dimpling much more readily due to larger pieces of pine. The paralam is highly compressed. It is a good substitute for large timber hardwood treads that can cost up to 5 times as much.
