At present the curtains seem to dictate the colour scheme so if you are prepared to change them you will have more scope. Maybe something plainer or blinds and a modern rug from which you can select new wall colours. Perhaps change the fluffy cushions as they dominate the sofas. At present it seems rather traditional - are you aiming for a more modern look? If so, I am sure there will be some good suggestions here.

Hi Carole, I actually have new curtains which I didn't put up yet. They are cream with a large gold leaf and also a dark cream leaf. They seem to match well with the walls, they don't go unnoticed. It's the fireplace wall I'm really stuck for ideas. Yes you are correct as I do want a modern look. How about wallpaper on this wall????

I would put the mirror higher so 6/7 inches off the fireplace surround & actually maybe change to a slightly bigger one in gold ? Add a couple of items to the mantlepiece maybe some small candle holders. Change the tv cabinet to a more contemporary one. Add a couple of pictures to the right of the fireplace; one above the other. Maybe change the lamp base(s) to gold since you are bringing the colour in with the curtains. Change the cushions. New rug ? Good luck.

Yes the skirting boards will be painted white and the mirror will be changed. I'm keeping the black leather sofas though. I love Chantelle's colours. They're fab. Good idea about the TVs cabinet. Will invest in a new rug. Thank you all so much.

Hi - glad you are making progress. Maybe choose the rug and cushions first, geometric designs tend to look more modern, and then choose the wall colour last - the taupe suggestion sounds possible but I would leave that decision until then. Most colours will go with the black sofas. Personally I would avoid wallpaper on that wall just have a beautiful mirror and, as suggested, 2 modern pictures to the right of it and perhaps another to the left of the door. Happy shopping!

I'd change the mirror for a larger one as it's too small for the fireplace and needs lifting a little. Maybe in gold to match your new curtains, You also have a nice ivory table, so possibly paint the tv unit to match and paint the other sideboard as they are a little mismatched and dark. The lovely cushions will pick up on the new paler shades.

I think black, cream and gold is quite a classic combination unless you wanted more colour? Perhaps a side table or low console to the right of the fire but keep the profile lower than the fire. I would change the mirror for a larger one and add something tallish on the LHS, agree re painting skirts, would do these in the ŵall colour though to maximise ŵall height and also paint the door. Perhaps a glass coffee table with a rug under the sofas? I would keep the rug similar in tone to the floor. You could also try arranging cushions either 2/3 on one side with just one on the other to move away from a traditonal look but do bring in the gold and pattern. You could try just a grasscloth on the fire ŵall. I would also add art. If you choose black frames keep the frame fairly thin. Also agree re tv unit.
