Pet "Proof" Flooring

Need some advice on what type of flooring to use that is Pet proof. I now have IKEA laminate flooring installed that was put in prior to the "Pup who pees" came to live with me. She has had accidents and the laminate floor just soaks it up and has expanded.

I am now thinking of doing a vinyl floor. I need a floor that is as close as you can get to water(urine) resistant, water(urine) proof and hopefully something other than cement would do the trick. I know the perfect solution is to have her not be allowed on the floor, but she is one sneaky dog. Am potty training as well, but in the meantime don't want to ruin yet another floor. I have read that Vinyl might be the best choice but then read further on the fine print and cleaning, "wet spills should be cleaned up immediately". So not so water resistant afterall.

Porcelain tiles with sealed grout. Or sheet vinyl. "Super Durable" = porcelain tiles. Pet Proof = porcelain tiles. A decent floor = sheet vinyl

Vinyl planks still have seams at every plank edge. Urine may not harm the floor but it will still have urine left behind after you clean it up. Sheet vinyl/lino, epoxied concrete or porcelain tile will all work. Everything else will grab either the urine smell or the urine itself.

I don't know about flooring but I kind of agree with Sophie on crate training. Keep her in her crate inside if she can't be supervised. Also use the cleaner made for pet accidents - don't recall the name - that neutralizes the odor to pets so they don't keep going back to same spots. But first and foremost, crate training, unless there is a solid reason not to (ie traumatizing to a previously abused pet).

I think this is a really nice kitchen - you've done a nice job. The only thing that is throwing it off are the two different floors in dining and kitchen area. I'd like to see the same flooring continued through both areas. I think you'll be very pleased with the difference it makes. Since you do not like the wood or the tile, perhaps a porcelain 12x24 tile would work for you. It's very durable, so you wouldn't have to worry about the Newfies scratching it and very easy to maintain. You'd could opt for one of the wood grains on the market or one made to simulate stone. I think a greyish color would work well.

It is fair comment on not so pretty tiles and unfortunately you can't do much with the floor here because it covers too large area. On a picture you can see only lounge area, which is actually part of the kitchen. Tiles cover floor in the kitchen, lounge area and dining room. Extra large rug wouldn't make it better. This project has two tough points: tight budget and timing.

We're renting a two bed apt and can do a few smaller things in it, nothing too major... I want to get a dishwasher but the most appropriate space for it, under the drainer, is where the washing machine is. We have a condenser dryer that is out in the 'dining area' and on a wooden floor, whereas the kitchen is tiled. I think the easiest solution for us would be to make a laundry cupboard of sorts in that corner of the dining area, and stack the washing machine and dryer there, making space in the kitchen for the dishwasher. So, my questions are these... is this a good idea at all? Should we put some waterproof tray type base to protect the floor? Is it advisable to sound proof the cupboard somehow? Thanks

If there is concrete under your laminate, you should know that it is not water/urine proof, and it will be difficult to get the smell out. Check online to find out how to best remove the smell from the concrete.

Crate training for sure and yes clean up of wet spills immediately also needed.

That said we have an eleven month old golden retriever and hardwood floors. No issues as we clean up messes promptly

I will look into sheet vinyl, thank you for the info. I removed some of the laminate planks that were damaged and tried to replace but it's extremely difficult to do when the problem board is in the middle of the room. So for now it is temporarily "fixed" but floors will have to be replaced. While working on the crate training and if there are additional accidents , i don't want to be left with another floor I have to replace. Am looking to sell in a few years and would really like a super durable floor.

If your dog is peeing on the floor you have not trained her properly. Crates are no substitute for proper training & are often overused. Please Google Ian Dunbar Errorless Housetraining. We used his method for our rescued pup & she never had a single "accident."
