Flooring advice

Hi, I am trying to choose wood flooring to run throughout the downstairs(including kitchen).. I have been advised to go for laminate rather than solid/semi solid as laminate is more scratch and water proof and I have young kids. I have chosen sand coloured high gloss units or kitchen. My dining table and dining unit are walnut with white gloss top. I am trying to decide on whether to put a similar walnut on floor or introduce a new wood like maybe the lighter sandy colour laminates that are available now ... Any advice please?
