Is the flooring concrete?

Is the floor is concrete, was it polished at the time of construction or was it done later as a remodel? I am planning on having concrete floors for a new home build and have been noticing the locations of joint spacing on other concrete floors.

Hi bradcp,

Yes the floor is a 4" thick, radiantly-heated concrete slab, and the owners applied the 'charcoal' stain (I don't have a record of the manuf.), and sealed the floor themselves during the initial construction, after most of the construction was done. The 'control' joints were saw-cut into the floor after the concrete was set and cured for just a couple days, while it was still 'green'. Good luck with yours!

Thx for quick reply! Good information, especially regarding the saw-cuts for control joints. I believe the density of control joints (or lack of) is part of the design and finished look of the floor. I like the spacing in this photo.

Contact your local decorative concrete supplier or cleaning supplier and ask for a neutral based cleaner. I would use that to clean it and you can also use a wax to go over your sealer which will give you a longer life for your sealer. Typically the wax will give you a high sheen if you are ok with that and after that you can try just using a damp micro fiber hard wood floor mop to clean the floor.

We now have polished concrete floor throughout the ground floor and I find it difficult to fit in our traditional furniture, especially as regards the coffee table in the living room. I'd be immensely grateful for any suggestion.

Hello, I'd love to get opinions on having a polished concrete floor in the living room? I would soften the room with a large rug and pops of bold colour. I love the industrial look, peppered with mid century style furniture (doubtful if I will be able to afford it, but that's the vision at the moment!). The plan would be to have the same floor finish in the kitchen which is a separate room but can flow into the living room if the sliding door is pulled back. Photos would be amazing. Thanks so much in advance.
