Guest bath redo: To tub or not to tub?

I am contemplating the options for renovating our guest bathroom upstairs. It will primarily be a cosmetic facelift to bring the room into the 21st century. I am wrestling with whether to replace the existing tub/shower combo with just a walk-in shower (no tub) or whether to include a tub. We have a separate tub and shower in the master bathroom, and a shower/wetroom on the first floor. I am hoping this community can offer suggestions and pros/ cons. Thanks.

Comments (10)That's looking a lot better. A few followup comments: 1. I agree with bepsf that the opening to the dining (formerly living) from the entry should be an "archway" or similar opening. A pair of pocket doors would work or make sure the french doors can open 180 degrees and stay out of the way. Similarly, I'd add an opening (with french doors if you must) on the other side of the fireplace to match the ones you have. 2. I'd flip the door to the utility room to the left so it aligns with the exterior door. Much more efficient use of space OR (better yet) flip the exterior door to the east and move the countertop to the other side. This way the door won't be as visible from the entry, you'll get more countertop, and the flow will be better. 3. Sitting room - if you need to keep the entrance from the front hall, why not move the fireplace to the southeast corner, flip the couch to the north wall and use this as your formal living room (and no door). The flow into the room will be much better. It also gives you much better use of the bay window. Then you can use the room now labeled "living room" as your more informal sitting/family room. 4. Squeezing past the shower to enter the powder room is still awkward. 5. Kitchen - it looks like the island (I assume that's what's in the middle) should move to the west to give yourself enough space to have a usable counter on the east wall. 4'6" is a pretty good distance between counters.. You seem to have more space than you need between the island and the patio doors. There's also a lot of inefficient space between the fireplace and island. I'd make sure that there's either enough room for a small table, or just make the island and east wall cabinets longer. 6. One last thought - since you rearranged the use of the rooms, had you considered switching between the dining and living? I think this would make things work even better. Comments (21)My understanding: You didn't find any problem functionally, but you feel this looks old & need some brightness & change in this. My advise: 1). Remove towel rod, shift it next to tub or behind closet & have full length mirror, which will make your space double & reflect natural light as well thus makes the space more bright. 2). Get couple of plants (small plants or bush type or creepers which doesn't occupy much space on floor but grows vertically). 3). Get some artifacts made from bright colored glass, can flower vase or wall hangings or glass tiles etc, these can be of yellow or Bright Orange color these are to be hung on walls opp to mirror or pasted(3M tape both side glued) if you are using tiles. 4). Get a mat of same color as artifacts & place between tub & closet. these all are easily done by yourself. Comments (16)About your plumber saying "plumb layout is confirmed". That is a load of rubbish. It's fairly easy to move drains around (yes he might have to rip up some walls, but he can also do off-the-wall installations to avoid that). In a small bath proper placement is of the utmost importance!!! If you have the bathtub and shower next to each other that will be much better and then the glass separator idea should work. padmaramachandran's (see post above) setup sounds more reasonable to me as well (see first picture below). This is similar to your setup but as you have more space you could put in bath tub and shower where the picture only shows a bath tub. Also if you do it that way you could theoretically have a bidet or a wider wash basin (small double perhaps too). Example layout: Do you need a bathtub in the guest bath? If not you have a lot more room to work with. E.g. for a double wash basin and large walking shower and a bidet (2nd picture). Example of off-the-wall installation for toilet and bidet and a large walking shower. Finally if you ignore this advice and do it the way you planned ;) then I suggest you really thing about that glass separator. Doing it right will make a lot of difference (see 3rd picture). 8 years agoHi, I would ask you first how long you plan to stay in your home. In most of the renovations we design, the tub goes and is replaced with a shower and bench. Unless you are updating the home for a sale, I would mot hesitate to remove the tub. Several of my clients prepare their guest room and bath for elderly relatives who visit, and for them especially, I recommend installing a shower only. A roll-in shower (with no dam to step over) is also very practical for older users.
