8 years agoGet rid of the valance over the window and add long drapery that starts under the top window. Then add shelving around the fireplace so the space doesn't look so empty. Good Luck!

Need help with a red carpet
Comments (28)Ok - currently saving money on carpet; already have pool table and lamp for this area. What about creating different seating areas in the room. You said there are built ins? Computer station? Family using this space. Here is MY suggestion: I would use MORE than one rug - each for specific areas of this room. You can have the sisal berbers made to fit - and I think ONE large one would actually end up being a little messy as this would be huge - and could get off bounds? (out of shape) You could have these bound and use them to create different areas within the larger space? Is that a gold or a taupe or beige color between the red pattern? Here is my suggestion : the opposite side of the color wheel tones down the other - since this is a red color - how about using a very soft BLUE/GREY on the ceiling? Or a very soft Grey/Blue? And a very soft taupe or mocha color on the walls - something which is within the SAME tonal family as the NON-red portion of your rug? This should go nicely with your brown sofa and the sisal or other type berbers? YES - get one larger one (RUG for the area in front of the TV . . . large enough to go from the baseboard area - to completely under your sofa? BTW - LAZYBOY makes beuatiful furniture - and you do NOT have to get the plumped and rolled ubiquitious leather chair. OR, I can personally, highly recommend FurnitureLa South, in Hickory N.C. - and they will deliver for FREE! Love that! They have a style for everyone and this is where they actually make the furniture. They sell ALL manufacturers at cost. Well not Lane or Ethan Allen. My one last thought - since this is such a very large space - I would also get a rather substantial and DARK drapery rod using finials - and extend the width of the drapes to help balance the room on the other side with the windows. Since you have built ins on the other side - this will help balance the space visually. IF you do not like the color of the fixture material on the pool table light - you can get any finish you desire in a rustoleium paint - I would consider spray painting this something in the neighborhood of a oil rubbed bronze; or something with more of a dark patina? This would also help balance out the room and bring focus into the space you are utilizing - the rest will fade away. SO - ceiling paint a must; paint the trim or add a more traditional trim - at least 5 inches in depth; TWO separate rugs - not one big one - at least one for now for the TV area; Extend your drapes and raise them almost to the ceiling to help balance the room; Darker drape rod - and double the fabric for your drapes to make them look fuller; Spray paint a darker finish on to the pool table fixture. Use a tone of paint on the wall which will go with the tone of the other color of your rug! Another thought: You consider finding an old wooden bench - or church pew ??? that would be fun; you could place facing into the space around the pool table area? I'm asking, because that store seems to be just a bit wider than a door (so about 1 m) which is fine, but doesn't give much space to manoeuvre inside it. Also, a bit too many doors in a small space, but I'm afraid I can't offer you a remedy for that. You have two wide, massive windows and a door in between, I think that will give plenty of light. Personally, I'd just add skylights or a glass roof. Or a long strip of glass all along What you don't seem to have is ventilation windows. Trust me, you're going to want one in the utility, or at least a good fan. Transom style windows could work too if you can open them. I really wish you'd see an architect... there are lots of different, small things that a professional can spot from miles away that you wouldn't even consider. Comments (30)Melissa, when I said footboard, I meant this. It has a portion of the bed that extends beyond the mattress edge. You posted a bed that had something at the foot section of the bed. By platform, I mean a bed that has a hard area and only a mattress on it. Like this. It does not extend beyond the edge of the mattress, but does not have a box spring. It is also lower to the ground. The picture you posted was a high profile bed and box spring. It was not on a typical bed frame. A standard bed frame, used with box spring and mattress looks like this. Virtually invisible and does not extend out beyond the mattress/box spring set. That being said, I'd recommend you get a headboard that is not too big for your space. Neither in height or depth (distance from the wall). Comments (23)Adding width BEHIND THE BED - with a headboard (which doesn't have to be a "headboard"; it could be fabric, collection of mirrors, collection of pictures, a farm gate!, small chairs or stools) across the entire width. Matching bedside tables/bookcases/chests/ with LAMPS - useful storage for extra books, extra bedding, etc. CURTAINS always warm up a room. People will always feel colder away from home - provide an extra blanket or duvet to add to the bed. I notice there is no WARDROBE. Not really necessary for overnight guests (provide hooks on the back of the door) but useful for storing your out-of-season coats, etc. There is plenty of room behind the door. Buy one on eBay and paint it to suit your colour scheme....See More

8 years agoIf you want to be dramatic, you can go floor to ceiling with the drapes. For the rest of the room, emphasize the horizontal with a console on each side of the fireplace and the TV over one, a square piece of art over the fireplace.
Scale is important in a room this size. You can't get away with small stuff here because it immediately looks undersized. Better no decor--candles or frames or tchotchkes--than ones that are too small.

8 years agoIt is not helping having a miniature (child's) chair to the right of the FP.!!
Grover & everdebz have good ideas. But start with clearing all things not belonging in the room out. Sorry it really helps me with design. I would buy a media center which is about 2 feet wider than the TV & placing it to the right of the FP.
Then get some help with moving the sectional out into the room at the position that grover suggested. These two things are going to make such a difference. Look at a lower hanging ceiling fan as well. I think that if you hang the drapes over the tall windows it will give you the feeling that you do not need. (more verticality). Large art above the FP will help a lot. Think of a tapestry:

@everdebz - I like the style of the last pic you posted.... Thanks! Also, the shades helps keep the room cool during hot summer months....the same shades are on the bottom windows as well.
@sandradclark - The "miniature (childs) chair" is not its permanent home......the same goes for the other toys in the room.

8 years agoI'm a fan of "less is more" on the walls. I like the idea of trim moulding in a slightly darker shade than the wall itself. You can also use them to frame something if you wish.

8 years agoI have to add a picture from my favorite 2-story house design :) They have a "bumpout" for more design for the fireplace, but seriously, you only need the moulding in my view. :)

8 years agoIf you're going to do built ins around the fireplace, you might as well rework the mantel and surround. And it you don't want built ins, you can still rework the fireplace so it's a better fit for the space.
