Backslash for a beech work top with a highgloss door?

I'm having trouble deciding a backsplash for my kitchen. I haven't decided a colour for the walls yet, but It will be something neutral. my work top is beech with a highgloss kitchen door. I am also wondering about what finish to put on the walls to finish off the worktop. I'm not keen on tyles as I know I will tire of them and my kichen space is quite small. so I'm trying to keep it as open as possible, that why I went with light reflecting surfaces. I would appreciate any advice.
