Hi- great question. This wall was constructed of Smokey Mountain Fieldstone 2-4" thickness. The wall had a poured concrete footer, about 12" depth and then the wall was stacked, dry laid on top. Then it was backfilled with gravel, drain tile added behind and topsoil was added for the plantings. We are in the south (NC) so we do not have to worry about the freeze, thaw problems of more northern areas. The foundation does not have to be as extensive here. The steps were constructed of concrete block (with a poured concrete foundation) and then Smokey Mountain stone veneer was mortared to that. Thanks for your question!
Oh, I forgot, the patio is irregular PA bluestone, dry laid on a prepared and compacted gravel/stone fine bed. once the stones are laid, the joints are then filled with stone fines. They are now covered in moss, which is a nice added touch!
