Installing Iron Balusters

Hello,

I am currently replacing my old wooden balusters with wrought iron ones. The typical width of balusters are 1/2 inch thick which is smaller than the current holes in my railing, and base. Because of this, the 1/2 inch balusters wobble a bit. Should I be considering the Mega balusters that are 3/4 inch thick instead? If not, is there something other than the glue that I should be applying to the holes, to prevent the balusters from moving around once installed?

How is the wood finished that you are installing the ballusters into?

Hi Millwork Man - they are standard oak staircase we are having it sanded and refinished before installation of the new balusters.

Window shopping and lots of online browsing.! .haven't purchased anything yet!. Just getting house back in order after painting! I have put back the red/winey curtains that I previously had up...convinces me more to go with a neutral colour. The walls are rich Taupe but with a slight grey hue off them so I think the bottom left above actually might work. I have bedding very similar so I took them out and held up and think it would look very nice. Purple isn't a theme in my house (although I do have one bedroom painted purple/lilac) My sitting room is white red black and silver and living/kitchen room is tan and red. Just wanted to add something regarding the steps since I had also asked for advice on them: we had steps installed in slate, but unfortunately they did not turn out to look very nice, so will need to get redone . Was wondering if we should also incorporate some of the bricks seen on the porch, perhaps as risers covered by blue limestone or slate just to tie everything together?

Melissa, when I said footboard, I meant this. It has a portion of the bed that extends beyond the mattress edge. You posted a bed that had something at the foot section of the bed. By platform, I mean a bed that has a hard area and only a mattress on it. Like this. It does not extend beyond the edge of the mattress, but does not have a box spring. It is also lower to the ground. The picture you posted was a high profile bed and box spring. It was not on a typical bed frame. A standard bed frame, used with box spring and mattress looks like this. Virtually invisible and does not extend out beyond the mattress/box spring set. That being said, I'd recommend you get a headboard that is not too big for your space. Neither in height or depth (distance from the wall). I would also not get a mattress frame that extends beyond the size of the mattress. Sorry to have not been clear before.

Ideas for fire chamber lining?

I want to construct a rustic red brick chimney breast and install a free-standing fire basket in the fire chamber. I'm nor sure how to line the chamber though. Should I use brick slip tiles (matching the red brick on the chimney breast)? Or use regular dark wall tiles, arranged in brick pattern? Or would I need to use cat-iron panels? I don't want to line with fulls-size brick as by chamber is only 620 mm w x 830 mm h x 330 mm d and I might change my mind on the fire basket and install a stove later.

Definitely more of a challenge then as I was going to suggest a Hilti 2-part epoxy in the hole if painting. You still could use this but it will not be stainable, and they definitely need to be set in something to keep your staircase rigid.

Me too.

The other thing to consider if you're shrinking the size of your balusters is that the resultant spacing might be more than the code-required 4" maximum. So the wider balusters would prevent that problem.

I would figure out some sort of escutcheon to cover the holes and hold the balusters. This will look like it was incorporated into the design instead of looking like a repair.

Thanks for your responses. We are purchasing the iron shoes as well so that they can cover the holes. If we end up using the 2 part epoxy this might be nicely hidden with the shoes. I can't imagine this not being a typical problem for most people who replace wood ballusters with iron ones! I can't seem to find any advice online regarding this issue!
