yep, I designed it, provided the trades and supervised the work. Im glad you like it ; ) These lights are the ends of oil drums. I had them cut and the holes drilled and they are painted a battle ship grey on the outside and this bright yellow on the inside. The holes on the top were to let some light out upwards but they had the lovely accidental result of all these spots of light on the ceiling.
Thank you for responding so quickly and for the extra pic I am charmed by the cool pattern on the ceiling. You are so creative, where do you draw your inspiration from? Any websites, groups or discussions that I may join? I am also interested in upcycling and repurposing. You do it in such a way that doesn't look "junky".
.. the process is quite organic in that the overall design is done and agreed prior to work starting but elements change as problems arise or as objects are found so I think for me the key is to be flexible in approach and not too rigid with initial ideas (except where it counts and then I will fight my corner with anyone) ; ) ..for me I will agree on the overall theme for the job after meeting the client and discussing their needs and what they want and then spend day researching, collecting images from the internet and magazines(anything that catches my eye and not being too particular) and then I will go through all those images and discard the ones I dont really think work so Im left with a load of images that form the core of my design. Thats kind of it.. I actually cant remember where the idea of the barrels came from, I wanted an industrial edge to the look and possibly came across an image of something similar, or I saw the barrels somewhere and it just clicked. For me the important thing is to flow with it, embrace problems as the things that make happy accidents happen and be practical about what can be achieved "properly".
(I hope thats helpful and not too long winded)
Steve
PS the key to not "junky" is to contrast the junk with slick.
