How to make this weird space work?

We just bought a house and it's wonderful everywhere except the main family room space. It's open concept with the kitchen. I would like a smaller TV with perhaps a fireplace below, but my husband is determined to have his huge TV above the mantel and just figure out something below. I'm freaking out (to myself) knowing that this will look ridiculous. How do I solve this design delimma, and please my husband as well?

Tell him to get an even bigger TV and hang it on the wall to the left of the mantle. Then he can put a console underneath for all the TV stuff.

I think a big TV above the mantel is going to give everyone a crick in the neck! To further your argument check on recommended heights for the TV in relation to the seating area. A new built-in to the left for TV and display shelves could then tie in to the new lower part of the fireplace!

Simplify is always a good strategy with play rooms. The temptation to cover the walls with artwork and posters can add to the visual clutter. I would suggest a larger area rug to ground the space and create a soft place for playing on the floor. A medium colour with a fleck from other hues in the curtains and upholstery will help hide dirt and lint. I think you could definitely cozy it up with a warm wall colour to unify the space. Lastly, closed storage for the toys goes a long way to creating order from the chaos. You will have a lovely space the children enjoy and you find restful.

The way to get your own eyes on the issue is to start with a general clear out so you can really "see" your kitchen and "keeping" room. Box up and remove all the stuff - tops of cabs, counters, art on walls, fridge and floor clutter, photos, area rugs. Then dig into the cabs and the hutch and remove all the items you only use once or twice a year. Store those away from the kitchen so you gain more room in the cabs for items you regularly use. Is that a radiator on the wall by the TV? I'm thinking the hutch niche would make a great computer area with a built-in desk. Are there any other doors into this room and is this your only living room? What size is the window at the table? Are you up for more than rearranging things? Any construction you can do? Can you take more pix, comment here and attach images?

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

Hi. I think the overall look is good. Large tiles do make a room feel bigger as the pattern is less busy however I've seen the hex tiles in small bathrooms and they seem to work as your inspiration pic shows. I would probably lose the flowers though if I'm honest. Do you want the window for light or ventilation? Could a decent extractor be sufficient? I'm thinking that back ŵall could look quite busy. Is there any opportunity to change the layout? Moving soil pipes can be a little costly but could the sink be moved although ideally the loo would be hidden round the corner. You can pick up some great looking vintage or vintage style taps on ebay although unsure if the quality of the repro ones, If the layout can't be changed maybe have a corner loo and ŵall hung trough sink and put some storage in on the rhs as you come through the door depending on how you plan for the shower to open

Men! You have the ideal wall next to the fireplace for a huge TV and it won't give you an aching neck because it will be too high up if you put it above the fireplace. And apparently the rising heat from a fireplace shortens the life of a TV.

Mount a TV inside the space on an articulating mount. It has a scissor style arm that would let a TV larger than the opening float in space. The TV can then be pressed flush against the opening as to not project too far into the space.

The wall to the left of the fireplace is a perfect location for a television on a beautiful console table. I would never mount a television on a wall, especially high up. It's too hard on the eyes and the neck, except for the person who's in the Lazy Boy Chair on full back tilt.

Is there another room in the house that could serve as a man cave? A place where your husband can set up his television and create a whole space the way he likes and you can save your family room?

Definitely place a bigger size TV on your left wall. By using your left wall will give you more options arranging your sofas where you comfortable can watch TV, and nice balance for the rest of the room :) By just looking at the size of that space I'll say maybe a 60"-65" TV?

I wish you had posted more views. congrats on your new home!! at first glance, I think the lighting fixtures look dated....I'd begin by changing out the chandeliers (the pendants can still work) and remember that fixtures with concealed bulbs look more stylish, but also consider converting any hanging fixtures that aren't centered over a dining table or the island into pot lights, for a cleaner look. if hubby wants his monster tv let him or you'll never hear the end of it. I've been there, lol. i'd mount it directly onto the wall to the left of the FP and hang a beautiful piece of art over the mantle, and be sure to snake all wiring through the wall or it will become a distraction. then, place a long and low oriented solid piece of furniture below the tv to ground it and create a nice balance that non-solid furniture pieces can't bring to your space....you can place your cable and dvd player on or in it. keep us posted! and show us more pic! :)
