how do i update and lighten this large oak bookcase/shelf.

Large oak fireplace/bookshelfs in a long rectangular room. We have just added more recessed lighting to help. I prefer stone and a lighter color for the shelves. Painting oak does not look good and I don't want to just add lighting or wall paper to the back of the bookshelf walls. Need something fresh and light on the clean but traditional side.

There is no reason why you can't paint oak and I would paint out all the shelves and above the mantel anfd leave the mantel and just the part around the fireplace itself.

I would paint the whole thing the trim color in the rest of the room.

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! Latest update! Made a few changes to the book cabinet to the left of the fireplace. Added chrome legs to match the legs on the tv cabinet and added doors to the top half to try to make it look less cluttered. The lighting in the photos isn't great but hopefully you get the idea.Am quite pleased with the result. Am still trying to decide on art for over the fireplace, keep changing my mind but considering getting this canvas (see picture).

Hi Travis and SoYoung - thanks for mentioning the fireplace.....I was thinking that I would keep it simple with a wood shelf over it and a large piece of Art but I now think it might be a bit lost. Would love some ideas as it needs to work with the built-ins which are slightly domineering. Also, Liam_Boyle - agree re the unbalance. The TV will be staying but I have a lovely coffee table and 2 identical sofas coming so I'm hoping to lay out symmetrically in the room. Will keep 1 of the chairs. Hope this will balance up. Thanks.

I think you're making great progress. CDR wanted you to put them all vertical because she thinks only professionals should style bookcases. We are/were all amateurs at one point, that doesn't mean we shouldn't decorate our own homes. You're getting there! Just keep studying the photos of bookshelves that you like and keep practicing. Just remember to keep the decorations simple. Look over the beautiful photo above from Maureen again, and you can see that some shelves are still all books, and there are only a few decorative pieces.
