Pillar & Perch: Architects + Builders
Architects in Charlottesville, VA
Average rating: 5 out of 5 stars16 May 2022
“Working with Ben Robbins (and the entire team at Pillar & Perch) has truly been a wonderful experience. Throughout our project to design and build a new home for us, they have consistently been knowledgeable, professional, and are a pleasure to work with. After listening to what we wanted and looking at our lot, Ben’s first design was nearly spot on (we only tweaked a few very minor things). That was impressive! Then, throughout the build process, they have gone out of their way to please us and ensure that we’re happy. Ben is very responsive and keeps us informed as to what is going on, and has even found us some ways to save money without sacrificing from the architectural integrity of the project. I highly recommend this company, and would use them again in a heartbeat.”
Patrick Farley Architect

“There are many architects and builders but few who have the skill, experience, and vision to design and build a green house. Looking for a modern architect in the area, we found Patrick's website and we got to know him before we hired him. We liked him immediately and never "interviewed' anyone else. We never regretted it. He shared our desire to build lightly, letting the surroundings influence the design and materials. He artfully brokered the inevitable differences of opinion between husband and wife, and we enjoyed the consultative process of working out the design together as a small team. After the design was complete, we were happy to have him build the house, too, which has worked out beautifully. On complicated custom houses, there are many situations where unforeseen circumstances or questions arise, and things move more quickly and smoothly when the person responsible for constructing the house is the same person as the person who envisioned it. The house is not yet complete, but we are currently on budget (more or less) and the product is a work of art. I have suffered through many residential and commercial building projects over a lifetime, and this is the first one I've enjoyed. If you're looking for a person with the sophistication and experience to design and/or build a complicated "dream house," Patrick is your man. And if you're not sure, ask him to take you to our house and show you what he is capable of creating. I think you'll come away a believer!”

“We knew we would love working with Scott as soon as we met him. His portfolio of projects was impressive and we could easily see that our tastes were similar. Right from the start, he made the process of designing our home a team effort using his expertise to turn our dreams into reality. He was/is fun and personable but also very professional in his approach. We always knew where the planning and execution stood. There were no unpleasant surprises or delays and he was incredibly flexible and helpful. It was a great experience!”

“Ruth Ellen completed a whole-house renovation (2003) and a screen porch design (2012) for our family. She is insightful, practical, and thinks of things to incorporate into her designs that we never in a million years would have thought of. She's got inter-personal and listening skills that would make a professional mediator jealous--traits that come in handy when managing the expectations and goals of a builder, owner, and even spouses! Working with her has always been a pleasure, and ten years on we are proud to call her our friend as well as our architect.”
Heath Wills Home Designs, llc
Architects in Charlottesville, VA
Average rating: 5 out of 5 stars27 March 2015
“Heath was a pleasure to work with and ultimately gave us everything we were looking for and more when designing our dream home. We had the majority of our architectural plans completed and we asked Heath to take a look at them and give us his input along with some major changes we needed to make to them. We went from a 2 car garage to a 3 car detached garage with an apartment above it and completely relied on Heath's design expertise to design an open breezeway and apartment above the garage. He cleaned up our overall plans for us and fine tuned a lot of details. Heath works quickly, efficiently and uses the latest software developments that allowed us to design our home in 2 dimension and 3 dimension. The virtual 3D of our home brought it to more of a realistic preview that we could walk through before it was actually built. Heath has a tremendous skill set when designing plans and really helped us get to a unified end goal of designing a home we want to live in forever. He had a lot of great suggestions throughout the process and many of the changes were made right in front of us on on the large screen during our meetings. I've never seen an architect do what Heath does! Whether starting from scratch or having a cohesive concept already in mind, Heath can do it all. If we were designing another home we would without a doubt work with Heath again however, since we built our "forever" home, hopefully we won't have to design another home. :) Thanks Heath! -Damond & Dawn”

“After interviewing several architects to design a home for us in Rockbridge Baths, VA, we chose Candace Smith. She totally fulfilled our expectations. She was an active listener as well as a creative collaborator. She was able to blend our ideas for a home with the skill and knowledge needed to develop building plans. The end result is a stunning as well as functional home overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. We met frequently with Candace Smith on the building site and in her office to ensure that the house would meet our expectations which included placing the house in just the right location to maximize the views. Additionally, she joined us in interviewing prospective builders and worked with him throughout the construction process. In sum, Candace is a superb architect and it was wonderful to work with her and her staff.”

“I hired Steve to design and install the entry gardens to our house. The location was a fairly steep slope that was difficult to mow, and in full sun. I wanted year-round interest, but not requiring frequent planting or tending. With a combination of hollies, nandinas, barberries and several focal point trees, my entry gardens look great all year. Steve oversaw the tilling of yards of compost to improve water retention and enrich the existing soil. Plants were carefully set out according to his plans and have blended into a harmonious tapestry. As a long time gardener, I was impressed with Steve's knowledge of plant material and the way he combined it. He is easy to work with and has an artistic eye. I would highly recommend his services.”
blueply design
Architects in Charlottesville, VA
Average rating: 5 out of 5 stars14 November 2014
“I hired Kendra Guiffre', owner of blueply design, as the architect for my vision of a modern minimalist house built out of the city on 8 acres of land in the country. From the beginning I was impressed with Kendra's professionalism and commitment to the project. Her work ethic was beyond my expectations on every level of the process. Kendra was a team player; always responding positively to any construction issues as the house was being built. There were many meetings in regards to problem solving throughout the entire project. She never failed to be prepared with creative ideas for solutions. She was readily available as well as for required meetings on site. Kendra's creative approach and use of space was astounding and of course added so much to the finished project that added much enjoyment to the practicality of living in the house. Without a doubt if I had another big project like the one she did for me, I would hire her to be on board as part of my team. She is exceptional in client relationships. A job well done with Kendra by my side!”
