Sweet Smiling Landscapes
When this homeowner’s neighbor removed two, two- story-high Ficus trees, her side-yard became baron and sunbaked. Concrete covers virtually the whole area from the house to the property line, but because the side-yard has a lot of foot traffic and serves as a sitting area to the basement apartment, the owner did not want to remove any of the concrete. The solution was to put up fencing to block the view of the neighbor’s house, then upcycle wine barrels and 55-gallon drums into huge planters. The drums are large enough to accommodate a full-sized tree and provide the added advantage of giving height to smaller trees to provide further screening of the neighbor’s house. Everything was painted in bright colors to give the space a cheery Caribbean feel. The neighbor’s tree removal ended up as a blessing in disguise, because what had been a drab trough-way was transformed into a happy patio.

Tradition Outdoor Living
Our client desired a covered outdoor sitting area to look original-to-the-home. We designed this patio cover with matching brick columns and ceiling. Outdoor ceiling fans, recessed lighting, and flood lights were placed for evening entertaining.
The fireplace boasts a high hearth and matching stone mantel with a TV mounted above it. A beautiful light natural stone provides the perfect contrast to the darker red tones in the brick, creating the focal point of this outdoor living space.
The patio cover extends from the original roof line, a seamless addition from the first set of brick columns.
Electrical outlets were positioned for easy access on the brick columns lateral to the fireplace.

For this project, the owners purchased a modern home and needed a contemporary look to compliment the exterior. Views from the inside were also key to a successful design. Polished black tile was used on the pool waterline, spa and raised feature wall, adding dramatic impact and sophistication to the finished project. The architectural concrete surround creates a gentle transition from patio to pool. The overall feel of this backyard is clean, modern and elegant.

The covered patio has loads of customizations. To start, we built a custom outdoor dining table made of glass, tigerwood, and stainless steel. The outdoor kitchen features a Bull grill and a honed granite counter.
A fiber cement alcove was designed to house the television and is flanked by tigerwood privacy walls with cool cut outs that hide LED lights and floating granite shelves to display accessories. There is a ceiling fan for added comfort, pendant lights above the dining table and track lighting in the kitchen and living areas.
