The client wanted a tropical-looking garden in his South-facing backyard, so an allée of very young, hardy palm trees was planted along the driveway. However, even the hardiest varieties of palms still need winter protection in this Canada 4b/5a - USDA Zone 4 climate. We obtained the expertise of a palm tree specialist in the Montreal area to purchase the hardiest palm varieties and ensure their successful survival over the winter. We planted them along the driveway (shown here at a 3-4 feet height, having already survived several winters here). The palm trees extend from the backstreet entrance all the way up to the house. We also added tropical-looking perennials in the bold colours the client preferred (see subsequent photos). Photo credit: E Jenvey

The backyard is very sunny. Here is an initial planting of an assortment of tropical plants - the tallest are the 8-foot to 10-foot hardy palms (which need specialized winter protection in this Upper Ottawa Valley garden), a banana plant (which winters indoors) and tropical annuals in the container. Additional younger palms are planted further along the driveway, and hardy perennials, both shown in subsequent photos, are added for colour and in order to attract native pollinators and birds throughout the seasons.
