1,500 bottle wine cellar built for award-winning San Diego chef. Generous display racking to showcase esteemed collection and share with guests and clients. Flowing, curved dynamic throughout cellar with custom storage and suspended racking to maximize space. This custom wine cellar design in Del Mar / La Jolla Area in San Diego California focuses on wine display. A few different types of wine bottle showcasing techniques were used in the wine storage space, including high reveal display, horizontal display, arches coved trays, wine case storage, curved countertops, and overhead racking. These custom wine racks in Del Mar / La Jolla, San Diego California were crafted from Premium Redwood; a highly sought-after material, and one uniquely able to withstand the cool temperature and humidity inherent in a wine storage space. LED lighting was installed to illuminate the lovely racks. At their foundation, wine cellars are above all a place to safely store and age wine. However, wine cellars are also highly valued as spaces to display and enjoy a wine collection amongst guests and friends. This custom wine cellars in particular embodies this spirit of entertainment that many wine cellar owners hold dear. Throughout this walk in wine cellar, at each turn visitors are welcomed and drawn to marvel at the cellar’s beautiful collection. The rustic wine cellar owner, an award-winning San Diego chef, envisioned a cellar where clients and guests could be entertained among 1,500 of his most carefully selected bottles. From custom pull out display shelves to angled individual display racking, labels of select bottles from his collection are prominently featured throughout the beautifully designed large wine cellar. While the wine is certainly the centerpiece of this remarkable walk in wine cellar, various custom design features give this cellar its unmistakable character and appeal. At the entrance to the wine cellar is a custom distinguished distressed redwood door and above the door hangs suspended racking that you’ll only find in a custom wine cellar. Finally, perhaps the most dramatic feature of the wine room is its regal custom flooring. Visitors will also notice the undeniable flowing design of the large wine cellar created by gentle curves of the countertop and racking. The subtle curves not only enhance the flow of the walk in wine cellar, the curved display racking fans bottles out before the visitor and the arches above the redwood countertops complete the rounded aesthetic of the cellar. Another unique feature of this walk in wine cellar is the uncommon shape of the room. Because of the irregular angles of the former bedroom, emphasis was placed on creating a space that was visitor friendly and still contained plenty of wine storage and display racking. For Vintage Cellars’, being able to take almost any unique space and transform it into a beautiful and spacious cellar is something we pride ourselves on. Small Vancouver Wine Cellar - Closet Conversion
Small Vancouver Wine Cellar - Closet Conversion
Blue Grouse Wine CellarsBlue Grouse Wine Cellars
This closet was converted to a very small wine cellar for our Vancouver area client. Racking on the upper half was single bottle depth so as not to run into the cooling unit that is mounted through the header at the top of the cellar. We then went with double deep wine racking on the bottom half to increase capacity and create a serving area. The racking used in this cellar was from our Blue Grouse modular series, modified to fit the space but keep costs down, as opposed to a fully-custom solution. 2010 NARI CAPITAL COTY FINALIST AWARD WINNER Project Scope: Transform a little-used room in the client’s lower level into an entertainment center, featuring a 1,500-bottle refrigerated wine cabinet, a wet bar, a custom-made bookshelves surround for existing hearth, and television hanging built-ins. Challenges: Primary technical challenge was to find a way to unobtrusively install a large “split system” chilling unit to service the wine cooler. Solutions The contractor started with a rectangular space that was appreciably stripped down, except for the fireplace at the far end. An adjacent room housed a professional pool table. The client’s primary concern was how to situate the custom-built wine rack were to specify and fabricate. Although there was plenty of space in niche to the left of the stairway, there was no obvious way to locate the wine rack’s chilling unit for ducting and chiller unit. Both client and contractor agreed that the logical setting for the rack would be along the short wall adjacent to the room’s entrance. But the short wall afforded no room for the chiller, a “split system” unit that needed adequate “breathing room” to avoid overheating After many design sketches, the contractor had a tentative solution: house the chilling unit in a utility room behind the stairs leading to the basement. This would keep the unit out of sight and muffle the sound of the compressor. Then question was how to “circumnavigate” the stairwell and run plumbing lines from the utility room – which was about 20 feet away — to the rack. A floor-level path would be exposed to possible damage and aesthetically unpleasing. Installing the line in the concrete slab flooring would be difficult and expensive – and any repairs to the line would mean tearing up the floor. The only alternative, the contractor suggested, would be to route the lines overhead – run them straight up from the chilling unit, over the joists above, and around the back of the stair case. Once past the staircase, it was straight shot above the joists to the short wall; the lines would then run behind the wall to the wine cooler resting on the floor. This highly creative solution pleased the client greatly: it not only isolated the chilling unit, but allowed it to be easily serviced; the lines were protected and out of sight; and the wine rack – situated as it was in the room – seemed like it was part of the original house design. At that point, the contractor needed a wine rack design that seemed equally “original” to the home – and here, too, the challenge was met. Custom-built cabinetry span the length of the wall, with two floor-level cabinets flanking the wine cooler. Above, twin glass-facing walnut displays – lighted and rising nearly to the ceiling – rest on a black marble countertop, showcasing the client’s impressive wine collection. On the long wall perpendicular to the rack, a widescreen television hangs between two built-in bookcases designed by the contractor. The firm also fabricated the two bookcases now flanking the original fireplace in the far end wall – as well as the glass-faced hanging cabinets which are lighted above the newly installed wet bar.

This large beautiful wine cellar was hand dug below grade. Each 5 gallon bucket of dirt carried out was tracked by notches on the piece of wood hanging on the wall (see additional pictures). In total, over 800 buckets of dirt were excavated to build this room to storing over 1200 bottles of wine. The custom wood door welcomes visitors into the wine cellar. The wine racking was made of All-Heart Redwood. A variety of racking elements were used to showcase and accommodate various size bottles such as a lit high reveal display, rope lighting, quarter rounds, Cooperage table top, stemware holder, custom cabinets and drawers, half-round display, curved corner, adjustable bins, box diamond bins, case storage, and picture boxes set into the racking. The print on wall was taken by professional photographer Richard Duval - www.vinelines.com. This photo taken by Inviniti Cellar Design - Kathy
