The competition is an annual reflection of the efforts of individual home owners, architects and contractors that have made a strong impact on residential architecture in Rotterdam. The award spotlights the best residential buildings, and this year, Verbrugge and van Zwoll's home was part of the winning neighborhood 'Een Blok Stad'. The competition is a way of stimulating the architectural climate in the city, recognizing pioneering design, and boosting the quality of urban development. Een Blok Stad comprises over 60 homes of varying sizes and styles. Since the project began, the neighborhood has been injected with young new residents, a positive boost for Rotterdam-West. The jury felt that Een Blok Stad resulted in a contagious and complete answer to inner city living in Rotterdam, an exemplary piece of modern demand-driven urban renewal.
