Benefiting from varied stone and gravel hardscapes, this back yard is used in many ways. Transitions are marked with a change in structure of paths, walls, and features. The dining area is defined by a seat wall that ends where the fire feature area starts. Garden beds surround the space as an accent, softening the space. The brief from the owners was to renovate their existing landscape pool area to enhance the materials and flow of the space. eScape help to develop the brief with the client in a collaborative way to incorporate what was working well and what needed changing. One of the main challenges on this project as with many pool areas was the tight access and existing pool fencing position and effect on space and proportions. In the design eScape developed ways of opening up the pool fencing to allow for a better flow between the pool area and remainder of the garden spatially.

Pots provide height and are a solution to planting larger plants in smaller spaces.

Raccoons and gophers routinely destroyed the lawn in this side yard. As a result it was not an inviting outdoor room. Although the client was adamant at first, a premium sample of artificial turf persuaded her that she could still have an authentic look and feel of spacious green serenity. We created a larger planting border with drought-tolerant plants, and added boulders for texture and to create a more organic perimeter. The client was thrilled that she and her family could still lounge, read, do yoga, and have Easter egg hunts in a garden that provided all the textures needed to invite magic.

The planting design selected to be applied was to remain modern but be suggestive of lushness. A subtle tropical design theming was incorporated into this courtyard design due to the microclimate that was apparent to the sheltered site. Although the garden spaces are limited, interest was obtained through a differential of planting forms and by balancing repetition and randomness.

A backyard court can make great use of space that would otherwise go unused. Safer than playing on the street, more convenient than playing in the driveway, a backyard court will have the kids playing outdoors more than ever.

Entertaining is truly important to this family so, after downsizing their home, they wanted to maximise their new outdoor space to allow for visiting families, and complement it with a minimalist garden that matched their new location.
There was also the extra challenge of finding a set of plants that would thrive in the sandy soils and salty winds.
To begin with, we excavated the site to achieve the right levels and centred the garden around a beautiful granite water feature, framed with Australian hardwood benching, timeless granite paving and charcoal pebbles.
The garden was built to reflect the coastal location, using a mixture of Treasure Flower, Mat Rush, NZ Christmas Bush, Grass Trees, Coastal Rosemary and the Purple-Leafed Sticky Hop Bush – with stainless steel light fittings providing a subtle, modern contrast.
The end result was a natural courtyard dominated by earthy, coastal tones complemented with crisp modern finishes – and a set of plants that would thrive in the surrounds.
