We designed this informal, Asian inspired Zen garden with curved gravel paths, sitting areas with a fire pit, bamboo, and Japanese red maple. Their back yard was too shady to grow good grass so we made a great hang out space for them. Cutters Landscaping installed this project.

The exterior renovation at Mesa Fire established site access on the North side of the site, connecting the outdoor spaces to the writer’s studio.

The custom gas fire pit is built on a raised patio. Natural stone pavers were selected to contrast the walkway and main patio pavers. Both the change in material and the elevated patio distinguish this area as a separate outdoor room--one of seven on this 1/2 acre property.

It was decided to hide the ugly existing board on board fence that the builder had done and create an independent architectural screen in front of it. Custom milled western red cedar horizontal slats where incorporated into the design. The results speak for themselves!

Simple design. Easy to use. A place for snacks & cocktails. This contemporary combo fire pit and table is the destination place for good conversations late into the evening. And when it's time to call it a night, simply flick off the gas line switch!

Beyond Landscaping
This Toronto backyard may be small in space but it's big on style. We created two defined living spaces - a dining area on a raised square cut flagstone patio and a sunken living area with a fire table that will add style to any evening ambiance. This space is a perfect extension of the house. It's not only big on style but function as well and makes it perfect for this young family of five. There is a cozy bbq area with bench height stone wall and lounge area for mom or dad, long stretch of grass perfect for throwing the football and dining for the whole family (even the little ones!) When design in small spaces, creating defined rooms and keeping the unity between them can make the space feel larger and much more functional.

Encircling a sleek pool, this garden for a growing family offers comfortable spaces in which to play, relax and dine. New raised planters and containers overflow with citrus, herbs and colorful Mediterranean plantings. Synthetic turf provides a soft, inviting play place in a shady area of the yard. Despite their location just outside downtown, the homeowners have an expansive backyard abutting Lake Pend Oreille. They enjoy the space, but needed a spot to gather lakeside. A patio with natural flagstone pavers is accented with sculptural boulders and seat rocks. A gas fire pit and custom shade sail create a comfortable space for chilly nights and sunny days, maximizing the homeowners' use of the space.
