The Kitchen The previous kitchen was a dated plan which cutoff the family room and living room / dining room area with walls and arch ways to enter each room. The space had a lot of cabinets, but was too small and felt crowded with more than a couple people in the kitchen at once. The client loved that the kitchen had a lot of natural light with a huge window looking out to the yard and wanted to incorporate a design that had as much natural light but included a more open feel with an island everyone could sit around. She also wanted a nice big vent hood over a cooktop. The challenge was on! Our NEW and Improved design gave our client 2 new tall windows with a brand new custom wood vent hood in the middle of both of them. We moved her cooktop to where the original sink was once located and created a whole new kitchen setting. The sink went on the island along with a pull out microwave drawer and the dishwasher. We made sure to add a lot of storage pull outs throughout the kitchen and nitched out the island for bar stools to not take away space from the family room. Both walls separating the family room and living / dining room areas came down and the family room was reinforced with a new wood beam that we stained to match the flooring. Cabinets are a white shaker on the perimeter with glass cabinets by her kitchen table. On the island we chose a Grey Stone shaker with shiplap on each finished side. The countertops are a Calacatta Verona Quartz with really pretty veining that we took up the walls on each side of the windows and vent hood. Hardware is in a brushed nickel and faucet by Brizio. A new pantry complete with barn door was also added under the stairs for more storage. This kitchen is now an open plan that gives our homeowners everything they wished for.

This is another favorite home redesign project. Throughout my career, I've worked with some hefty budgets on a number of high-end projects. You can visit Paris Kitchens and Somerset Kitchens, companies that I have worked for previously, to get an idea of what I mean. I could start name dropping here, but I won’t, because that's not what this project is about. This project is about a small budget and a happy homeowner. This was one of the first projects with a custom interior design at a fraction of a regular budget. I could use the term “value engineering” to describe it, because this particular interior was heavily value engineered. The result: a sophisticated interior that looks so much more expensive than it is. And one ecstatic homeowner. Mission impossible accomplished. P.S. Don’t ask me how much it cost, I promised the homeowner that their impressive budget will remain confidential. In any case, no one would believe me even if I spilled the beans.

Completed in conjunction with DSRC LLC, this newly finished condo remodel sure brings a wow statement to first-time viewers. As you can see this kitchen shows off a brilliant white shaker door style with stacked crown moulding to give this kitchen a finished furniture appearance that will remain luxurious for years. The natural wood tile floors really pull the room together blending well with the off-white quartz top. The simple white glass backsplash tile keeps this space appearing clean and shies away from ever coming off as too busy. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. Exposed shelving and storage is also popular for eclectic, Scandi and industrial-inspired looks, so you could opt for glass-fronted cabinets or no wall-mounted cabinets at all. Remember that this will require more restraint in what you can store and more effort in keeping it looking presentable compared to what is stored away hastily behind cupboard doors.
