The Lazy Gardener
This homeowner wanted a muted palette, with modern cement walls to complement an updated center hall colonial perched on a rocky hill.
We chose green and white for its soothing, understated effect. Foliage is the star here. White astilbe cultivars are staggered to supply a long bloom time throughout the summer.
Gravel paths replace worn out grass, a tired brick patio is replaced with a modern bluestone patio and "faux bois" (fake wood look) cement sitting walls.

After remodeling their 1905 Craftsman house, the homeowners were ready to tackle the yard. The front was easily spruced up with a new walkway and plantings, but the steep, wooded backyard was a much bigger challenge. Rebuilding a failing retaining wall was the first step to creating access to the previously overgrown space. Concrete patios with natural stone steps provide space for a hot tub and fire pit, completely transforming the dangerous eyesore.

This sloped hillside has been transformed into a beautiful tapestry of colors and textures present in every season. I specified drought tolerant plants and shrubs that are low-water, low maintenance and deer resistant. Located in Novato, CA - Marin County. Some photos were taken just after installation and others 2 couple of years later.

The juxtaposition of formal architecture and soft foliage can only be experienced from within the garden during the lush growing season.
