Our client had purchased a new build house that came with a patio and a lawn. They wanted to create a contemporary garden that would provide plenty of space for sitting and entertaining friends, whilst allowing their young child some space to play. A raised deck with overhead beams sits in one corner of the garden. Comfortable seating provides a space to enjoy the morning sun. A child-friendly water feature has been installed at the front end of the deck, where it can be enjoyed from the house, and a small swing has been attached to the overhead beams. Chunky rendered raised beds have been used to surround the extended patio, and part of the decked area. These can double as seating, if necessary. The planting palette is restricted, limited to plants that are mainly evergreen and easy to look after, with silver and purple foliage to contrast with the muted tones of the decking and raised beds.

The clients used this garden as a place for relaxation as well as entertaining. They also had a dog and wanted a defined area in a part of the garden in order for her to be able to have free reign. A fence with a gate separated part of the garden in which their dog was able to play and allowed for her to be kept their when required. There were already two decked areas, one of which was unsafe and in need of replacement. The patio that was adjacent to the house was uneven in places and required relaying. This gave the opportunity to square off the previously diagonal shape of the patio and to create more room for entertaining. Raised sleeper borders were introduced, which were in keeping with the existing sleepers used elsewhere in the garden. These were then planted with architectural evergreen Phormiums, Libertia and Polypodium vulgare which were then complemented with Deschampsia, Heleniums, Rudbeckias, Achilleas, Kniphofias, Geums, Crocosmia, Heuchera and Geraniums to provide seasonal interest with splashes of colour. In the spring, Tulips, Narcissi, Crocus and Alliums will start the season off. The clients had an existing water feature which they wished to re-use, which was incorporated into one of the raised borders, close to the lower decked area and enabled them to enjoy the sound of it whilst relaxing in this area. Lighting was also installed to enhance specific features of the garden and extend use of the garden well into the evening.

This small back garden had more than its share of issues to address. From the narrow angled site, to the slope of the ground, lack of privacy, public drains, aging existing retaining walls and deck, underground electrical wiring, and difficult access, it really had it all! The clients wanted a leafy secluded spot, where they could relax, entertain and feel immersed in nature. They also wanted a small productive area for some herbs and fruit trees. A garden shed was required and a means of access through from the front garden, although privacy was to be important. The old deck was removed and replaced with beautiful vitex decking. This new deck connect the rooms of the house and wraps itself around the house, effectively managing the worst of the slope and creating clear symmetry within the angled boundaries. A central retained bed with a feature flowering cherry tree creates a generous boardwalk and makes the decking feel part of the garden. A privacy screen and considered planting increases privacy. A series of oversize platform stairs lead up to the highest part of the garden, which is filled with raised beds for vegetable and herbs and fruit trees. Generous natural schist stepping stones connect the utility area of the garden to the decked area and meander through the vege garden. The planting is designed to be leafy and green with soft white accents through the season. Beautiful feature trees include Prunus Shimidsu Sakura, Cercis Canadensis and Betula jacquemonti. Summer flowering perennials include gaura, verbena bonariensis, alchemilla mollis, anenome japonica and hydrangea. Photos by Dee McQuillan
