Rock outcroppings make a striking background for new lounge areas in this compact Los Angeles hillside garden. Working with the attributes of the site, we added native plants to drape over the stone, and converted hollowed stone planters into a firepit and water feature. New built-in seating and a cozy hammock complete the relaxing space, and dramatic lighting makes it come alive at night.

This was a courtyard garden completed at the end of 2016, that was part of a larger renovation project of an existing property.
The garden forms a generous and open entertaining space in the heart of Fulham, using a warm material palette and planting to make it a welcome area to use. Always on display through new glass doors, the terrace was required to be architectural and sculptural, creating a picture to be viewed from within the house.
Handmade clay bricks laid in a herringbone pattern edged with traditional Yorkstone, provided a 'carpet' like appearance to the terrace making the area feel larger overall.
The free standing planters and furniture provide flexibility for how the space can be used, whether for a garden ball game or summer cocktail party. Planted using seasonal highlights, the palette was chosen to succeed in the sun filled location and to reflect the client's Californian heritage. Bespoke storage has been made with the Garden Trellis Company.
This garden was designed with Charlotte Harris, and built by The Garden Builders.

The traditional fountain and surroundings are embellished with a variety of drought tolerant grasses, flowering plants and succulents. The removal of the dense and overgrown shrubs provides more outdoor living space for dining and entertaining for the homeowners' enjoyment. And now with site-appropriate plants and no lawn there is less maintenance and a lower water bill. Full color Blue stone and small mexican pebbles replace the lawn and pathways resulting in an updated and contemporary transformation. A variety of low-water plants including succulents offer year-round appeal and interest throughout the seasons. Photos and Design © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design
