This inset Shaker kitchen has a very calming colour scheme, with the kitchen cabinetry painted in Slaked Lime Deep by Little Greene and the island in Pompeian Ash. The wooden floor compliments the colours beautifully as do the other touches in the room. The brass inset handles tie in with other small brass details, such as in the bar stools and lampshade.

The new open-plan kitchen and living room have a sloped roof extension with skylights and large bi-folding doors. We designed the kitchen bespoke to our client's individual requirements with 6 seats at a large double sides island, a large corner pantry unit and a hot water tap. Off this space, there is also a utility room. The seating area has a three-seater and a two-seater sofa which both recline. There is also still space to add a dining table if the client wishes in the future.

Who said that a Burbank bungalow home needs to be doll and old fashioned. In this Burbank remodeling project we took this 1200sq. bungalow home and turned it to a wonderful mixture of European modern kitchen space and calm transitional modern farmhouse furniture and flooring. The kitchen was a true challenge since space was a rare commodity, but with the right layout storage and work space became abundant. A floating 5' long sitting area was constructed and even the back face of the cabinets was used for wine racks. Exterior was updated as well with new black windows, new stucco over layer and new light fixtures all around. both bedrooms were fitted with huge 10' sliding doors overlooking the green backyard.

Our client wanted a functional and striking kitchen and utility area spread across a long single wall with differing heights due to the mezzanine. A requirement was to have plenty of storage for a growing family, a large island with no seating, a large double larder, and to have a utility section with coat storage. The client wanted a traditional look to the cabinets which we achieved with cockbeaded frames and quadrant moulding for the door panels. The space is very light and bright due to the large crittall windows so the dark blue cabinets (Basalt by Little Greene) look great. Also, the exposed brick wall adds warmth.

Two-tone kitchens are definitely still popular! This contemporary masterpiece achieves the motif with wet-look icy blue paint and richly-stained walnut for warmth. 1” thick slab doors and drawers sport a narrow trim around their edges. Double-stacked cabinets take advantage of the vaulted ceiling, and glass doors adjacent to the fridge display collectables. Paneled fridge columns, dishwasher, and wine fridge maintain continuity. The focal point is a free-form blue-pigmented steel chandelier, centered on the walnut island; brushed stainless and brass custom hood; and the walnut cabinets that flank it. Brass accents the cabinet pulls; satin gold highlights the pot filler faucet; the prep and main sink faucets; and the instant hot/cold faucet. Undermount sinks are white granite composite, while countertops and backsplashes are marble-patterned “Dekton” quartz material. Underfoot is a playful blue and white diagonal randomly-striped tile. Abundant seating is supplied by a cushioned walnut banquette bench backed up to the island, anchoring an entirely custom dining-height table: a shapely brass base with a glass mosaic and resin tabletop. Three brass and fabric stools tuck under the island, while six walnut chairs with donut-shaped backs encircle the table. All the fabrics on the cushions, stools, and chairs are custom-colored pale blue bouclé. This project was done in collaboration with KA Design Group. Photography by Julie Leffell.

What used to be a dated 1980's u-shaped kitchen without any flow or interest is now an open and inviting gathering space with plenty of room to cook and for everyone to sit or walk around. We squared off the bay window area making cabinets with drawers and pull-outs a possibility, plus the extra deep sink cabinet has room for a filtered water/carbonated water system. The side windows are easy to reach, and one is a pass through to the BBQ area. The island doubles as a large dining table and has a prep sink that can also be used by the bar area and refrigerator/microwave/leftovers area without bothering the chef. Also in the island is a Perlick ice maker, wicker pull out baskets for fruits and vegetable and an open bookcase for cookbooks and to tuck away school/homework supplies. All the tall items like the refrigerator, pantry and wall ovens are grouped together to one side to keep the room from getting too choppy. The bar area has a beverage refrigerator and liquor and stemware storage but also has a charging station and drop zone storage since it is next to the door coming from the garage. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas.
