Flagstone paving flows around the house and into the courtyard between the guest cottage and the house. An arched stucco wall with a wood gate marks the transition between spaces. Simmonds & Associates, Inc.

The large alcove houses a giant AC unit which was visible from the street. This gate that leads nowhere allows access for servicing or removal of the unit. The bioswale is constructed of a Geo Grid to allow a dolly to remove AC unit if and when it fails. The beautiful rain chain filters rain water from the roof into the bioswale so the water remains in the garden and not down into the storm drain.

A new paver entry with red wood "bridge" to go over the dry river bed that captures rain water. Differing sizes of cobble provide interest for the different areas of the landscape. A low stucco wall divides the front yard into a public and private space. The private space includes a fire pit, seating area, and flagstone path.

This is a California xeriscape succulent garden. Clients wanted color and texture with drought-resistant plant materials. They enjoy garden sculptures, so we included a Buddha and a Roman bust planted with succulents. The previous owners of the property left behind some old San Francisco cobblestones, which we incorporated into the new design, using them as garden steps.
We built low, raised beds out of stone, also existing on the property, and used containers along steps and against existing concrete walls to soften the hard surfaces.

Succulents are an easy, low maintenance way to spruce up your outdoor, or indoor, spaces. These plants require very low water usage making them a perfect plant for the southwestern United States, or for the plant lover who is constantly forgetting their watering can.

With a limited budget, we were able to transform and update this front garden with a new modern pathway, a small patio, and a variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants. I included a selection of plants that provide a variety of heights, colors and textures, such as Goodwin Creek Lavender, New Zealand Wind Grass, Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark', Euphorbia characias and the ground cover Sedum rupestre 'Angelina' with chartreuse foliage. © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

Art Garden Design
The design intent was to unify this flat and expansive landscape. To create more flow and access, a new deck with wrap around stairs opens into the backyard. At the base of the stairs, a flagstone pathway transitions to a vegetable garden area, with picnic table and raised boxes, built out of salvaged Redwood boards. For visual interest and accessibility, moss rock retaining walls with timber ties and gravel pathway are carved into the hillside. Another seating nook made of flagstone looks directly into a rose garden. Beyond the roses, a Mediterranean planting pallet defines this landscape with seasonal blooms, defined foliage textures and edible fruit trees.
