Placed on a large site with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy at the rear boundary, this one story residence presents a modest, composed public façade to the street while opening to the rear yard with two wings surrounding a large loggia or “outdoor living room.” With its thick walls, overhangs, and ample cross ventilation, the project demonstrates the simple idea that a building should respond carefully to its environment.

This gorgeous courtyard pool needed to align aesthetically with the Italian architectural elements of the home. The abundant use of rich colored textiles, like Oklahoma flagstone and Tahoe Blue plaster by Pebble Technology International, and traditional scupper water features give the space all the warmth and splendor of the Tuscan hills of Italy, but nestled right here in the Texas Hill Country.

This mediterranean style swimming pool measures 18'0" x 36'0", and the raised spa measures 11'0" long with a 5'6' semi-circular side. The spa has a spillover water feature. Both the swimming pool and hot tub are capped by Indiana Limestone Coping. The decking is Jerusalem Limestone. The negative side of the raised spa is stucco. An automatic pool safety cover with custom stone lid system keeps the pool safe and clean. Photos by Linda Oyama Bryan

The view to the upper terrace includes a pool featuring custom designed Macedonia limestone coping that is convex at each corner where the sunflowers are prominently on display. The paving is produced from our Uxmal limestone which compliments the terra cotta roof tiles. The landscape beds are surrounded with a raised Macedonia limestone edging to compliment the raised edge of the pool. The vista leads to a Macedonia limestone pergola. The natural custom stone columns that support the open wood frame roof are Tuscan in style with an entasis.
The colors are rich and reflective of the Tuscan style of central Italy.
