We are lucky to have a small window in the Juliet balcony in a second floor bedroom, which afforded these shots of the living room as seen from above. This shot gives us a chance to appreciate the overall layout of the room, and the way the large jute rug outlines the central seating area, furthered defined by the smaller Persian rug which can be appreciated through the glass coffee table. The wonderfully unusual cafe-au-lait Mushroom stools by John Derian for Cisco Home are best appreciated from this vantage, as are the pari of Lane Acclaim side tables, adding a mid-century flavor to the more traditional style of the furnishings. The smaller, corner seating areas are also seen in scale as cozy nooks to escape to for reading, or a quiet cup of tea.

This garden room replaces an existing conservatory. Unlike the conservatory, the new extension can be used all year round - it is both light and well insulated - and does not suffer from noise when it rains. A glazed lantern (or cupola) allows light to reach the existing dining room (to which the garden room connects) and upon opening the automated windows, quickly removes unwanted warm air. Windows on three sides provide views of the terraced garden beyond. The building is formed with a Somerset Blue Lias stone base, rendered masonry and a traditional lead rolled roof.

You know by now we love designing in Bend, and Caldera Springs just feels like home! This project, (a collaboration with Olsen Bros. Construction and Heidi Byrnes Design) is the “forever home” for a couple relocating from Lake Oswego. Soaring wood ceilings, open living spaces and ample bedroom suites informed the client’s classic/modern finish choices. The furnishings aesthetic began with fabric to inspire pattern and color, and the story for each room unfolded from there. The great room is dressed in deep green, rust and cream, reflecting the natural palette outside every door and window. A pair of plush sofas large enough to nap on, swivel chairs to take in the view, and unique leather ottomans to tuck in where needed, invite lounging and conversation. The primary and back guest suites offer the most incredible window seats for cozying up with your favorite book. Layered with custom cushions and a pile of pillows, they’re the best seat in the house. Exciting wallpaper selections for each bathroom provided playful focal walls, from the deep green vinyl grass cloth in the primary bath, to a forest of sparkling tree lines in the powder bath. Amazing how wallpaper can define the personality of a space! This home is full of color, yet minimal in the “extras” and easy to maintain. It’s always refreshing for us to return to a home we dressed months ago and have it look just like we left it! When it comes to the layout of your living room, it will depend on what pieces of furniture you have – but how do you choose what living room furniture to add, whether you’re refreshing your living room design or starting from scratch? The best place to start is with the seating – one corner sofa will usually seat three to four people, and if that’s all you think you’ll need, then you can leave it at that. Placing your sofa along the longest wall helps to make the most of the space, but think about where you want the focus of the room to be, too. It’s natural that our living rooms tend to attract lots of items and belongings seeing as they act as multipurpose living spaces. Whether you love to read a book; watch a film; let your children play with their toys; practise a craft like knitting or drawing; play a musical instrument or play video games in your sitting room, there will always be a need for a few extra living room ideas that can help you with storage. Apart from the standard bookcases, side tables and TV units, there are a few other handy living room storage ideas you can invest in. As mentioned before, if you have the room and budget for it, a built-in storage unit could be the way forward. With a well-built unit you could hide your TV, DVDs, players, books, video consoles and all sorts away in one place. If you don’t quite have a large enough area for one, you could look at shelving – either side of the chimney breast is a great place to install shelving if you have one in your living room.
