This hallway is in the middle of the house and connects the entryway with the family room. All the display nooks are lighted with LED's and the shelves in the upper areas are adjustable and angled down to allow better viewing. The open shelves can be closed off with the pull down doors. The ceiling features a custom made back lit stained glass panel. This three-story vacation home for a family of ski enthusiasts features 5 bedrooms and a six-bed bunk room, 5 1/2 bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, great room, 2 wet bars, great room, exercise room, basement game room, office, mud room, ski work room, decks, stone patio with sunken hot tub, garage, and elevator. The home sits into an extremely steep, half-acre lot that shares a property line with a ski resort and allows for ski-in, ski-out access to the mountain’s 61 trails. This unique location and challenging terrain informed the home’s siting, footprint, program, design, interior design, finishes, and custom made furniture. The home features heavy Douglas Fir post and beam construction with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS), a completely round turret office with two curved doors and bay windows, two-story granite chimney, ski slope access via a footbridge on the third level, and custom-made furniture and finishes infused with a ski aesthetic including bar stools with ski pole basket bases, an iron boot rack with ski tip shaped holders, and a large great room chandelier sourced from a western company known for their ski lodge lighting. In formulating and executing a design for the home, the client, architect, builder Dave LeBlanc of The Lawton Compnay, interior designer Randy Trainor of C. Randolph Trainor, LLC, and millworker Mitch Greaves of Littleton Millwork relied on their various personal experiences skiing, ski racing, coaching, and participating in adventure ski travel. These experiences allowed the team to truly “see” how the home would be used and design spaces that supported and enhanced the client’s ski experiences while infusing a natural North Country aesthetic. However, narrow hallways are common in a lot of UK and Irish properties so hallway storage can sometimes be hard to achieve. The type of hallway storage ideas that would suit your home will always depend on the available space and flexibility you have in your space – if feasible, built-in storage like cupboards and under-stairs storage will really help, but if not, there’s hallway furniture, hooks, racks and rails that can come to the rescue. Where space permits, furniture that doubles as storage is a great idea. Hallway wallpaper is making a big comeback as it’s another way to add lots of character, colour and style to a small space like a hall or landing. If yours is big enough, it can be furnished with seating such as a hallway bench, armchair, rocking chair or beanbag; you could add a small table, lamps, hallway storage boxes, ottoman or bookcase (or all of the above!) to create a comfortable nook for reading, listening to music, or just passing the time.

Landing furniture ideas

The landing at the top of your staircase is too often a neglected but can provide valuable, flexible, additional space. The golden rule of furnishing landings is to ensure stairways aren’t impeded, but even with limited floor space this is an area that affords ample opportunity for furniture and design. Some landings may have enough room for furniture such as seating or bookshelves to create a quiet reading area, or a desk and shelving to provide a makeshift work space. Even if your landing is on the smaller side, use landing ideas such as a small hall table or stool accessorised with a table lamp, an antique bowl or flowers, which will add interest. A beautiful window seat can be the prize feature of a house, so if you have a bay window on your landing it seems a crying shame not to make the most of it. For a built-in option, seating with added storage can be installed under the window; alternatively, simply placing a bench, miniature sofa or chaise longue in the window will add charm to your landing.
