Keeping all interior furnishing at a low profile so that your eye stays focused on the crystal blue Pacific. Adding natural furs and playful colors to the homes neutral palate kept the space warm and cozy. Plants and trees helped complete the space and allowed “life” to flow inside and out. For the exterior furnishings we chose natural teak and neutral colors, but added pops of orange to contrast against the bright blue skyline. This open floor plan kitchen, living room, dining room, and staircase. Owner wanted a transitional flare with mid century, industrial, contemporary, modern, and masculinity. Atriumhaus in Niedersachsen Die Bauherren wünschten ein sonnen- und lichtdurchflutetes Haus. Das Grundstück, lang, tief und auf der Südseite von einem Mehrfamilienhaus beschattet, schien auf den ersten Blick eher ungünstig. So kam es zur Idee eines Atriumhauses, das aufgrund seiner partiellen Einschnürung erlaubt, die Fassade im Bereich der Einschnürung weit Richtung Norden zu verschieben und somit im Süden möglichst viel Abstand vom verschattenden Nachbarhaus zu gewinnen. Das modern interpretierte Konzept des Atriumhauses gab die Möglichkeit, viel Tageslicht ins Innere zu holen und die Geländebedingungen optimal auszunutzen. Aus dem Grundkonzept des Atriumhauses entwickelte sich eine Dreiteilung der Außen- und Innenräume: neben dem zentralen Atrium gibt es nun einen straßenseitigen Eingangshof sowie den rückwärtigen Garten. Zur Straße hin befindet sich das dreistöckige Schlafhaus mit den Privatbereichen. Dahinter liegt der schmalere Küchentrakt. Der Küchenblock setzt sich außen im Innenhof fort, das Material läuft scheinbar durch das Glas hindurch. Durch die Einschnürung des Baukörpers an dieser Stelle wird erreicht, dass die Fassade weit nach Norden zurückspringt und nach Süden viel Platz für einen Terrassenhof entsteht. In einer Split-Level-Bauweise folgen jeweils durch ein halbes Geschoss getrennt das Familien-Rückzugszimmer, die Kinderebene und ganz oben das Elternschlafzimmer. Der an den Küchenbereich anschließende rechteckige Wohnbereich öffnet sich durch raumhohe Verglasungen in den rückwärtigen Garten. Die schwellenlose Übereckverglasung lässt jegliches Gefühl räumlicher Begrenzung verschwinden. Alles scheint ins Grüne zu fließen. Der Holzbodenbelag zieht sich bis auf die Terrasse, über die das Dach weit hinausragt. Dies sinnvolle Wohnkonzept unterstützt das harmonische Familienleben. Die gesamte Innengestaltung ist aufgrund des großen Bezugs zum Garten in natürlichen Materialien und Farbtönen gehalten. In die Architektur eingepasste Möbel wie die Garderobe am Eingang sorgen mit vielen Zusatzfunktionen für einen aufgeräumten Empfang. Entstanden ist eine Ruheoase mitten in der Stadt. Ungestört von den Nachbarn kann die Familie ihr Reich genießen.

The kitchen was a tight space, so we got creative, kitting it out with additional storage and pantry space that didn’t exist before. The family is Italian, so we gathered a lot of inspiration from compact European kitchens, reconfiguring interior walls, but mostly staying within the footprint of the existing floor plan. Italians are really good at designing their kitchens “behind closed doors.” Drawing from that model, we incorporated hidden, multi-functional elements like custom pull out prep surfaces that tuck away, pop up utensil vessels, and a dish drying rack in the cabinet above the sink. Kitchen finishes included custom cabinetry with white automotive paint finish and oak cabinets stained a matte jet black. We anchored the space with one of our favorite light fixtures, the Moooi Random light.

Feinmann transformed this once cramped, disconnected, first-floor living space into a grand contemporary kitchen with room for dining, cooking, and entertaining. The homeowners specifically wanted to create a connected and modern kitchen with great lighting, room for two cooks, and more counter and storage space. Our solution was to bump out their home’s side entrance and remove the walls between their kitchen, family, and sunroom. These changes allowed us to create a space with open site lines and an entire wall of windows that offers ample natural light and a full view of the back yard.

This moody German Style Kitchen is designed around simplicity and clean lines. Every aspect of this design is based on minimalism, so a glass splashback was never up for debate. Similar to the cabinetry itself, the glass splashbacks minimal lines, and neutral colour do nothing to detract from the room or view. This large space is over five metres from the window (and source of light) however, the glass splashback acts as a mirror, reflecting both light and the sea view!

SKP Design has completed a frame up renovation of a 1956 Spartan Imperial Mansion. We combined historic elements, modern elements and industrial touches to reimagine this vintage camper which is now the showroom for our new line of business called Ready To Roll. http://www.skpdesign.com/spartan-imperial-mansion You'll see a spectrum of materials, from high end Lumicor translucent door panels to curtains from Walmart. We invested in commercial LVT wood plank flooring which needs to perform and last 20+ years but saved on decor items that we might want to change in a few years. Other materials include a corrugated galvanized ceiling, stained wall paneling, and a contemporary spacious IKEA kitchen. Vintage finds include an orange chenille bedspread from the Netherlands, an antique typewriter cart from Katydid's in South Haven, a 1950's Westinghouse refrigerator and the original Spartan serial number tag displayed on the wall inside. A kitchen designer or fitter can help you to decide the layout of your kitchen in terms of where to place your kitchen units, appliances and island (if you’re having one), but if you prefer to handle this yourself you can focus on where you want your key elements of your kitchen to be – the oven, hob, sink and fridge. Of course you might be constricted by space, but try to envisage the easiest and most efficient layout based on how you usually like to cook and prepare your food. If you’re fed up of always having to carry dirty pans and pots across the room to the sink, place the sink closer to your oven and hob. Should I include a kitchen island?

Kitchen island ideas are abundant these days; it seems most kitchen designs include a kitchen island, if not multiple islands. However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. Whilst a large kitchen pantry is the dream of most homeowners, it can’t always be a reality. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Rails or small shelves along your kitchen walls or splashback can help with hanging utensils or pans, or storing small items like herbs and spices in an usually empty space. If you’re working with a galley kitchen, a one-wall kitchen in an open plan space or just a pretty small kitchen, there are some small kitchen ideas that can help you get the most out of your cooking and dining area. If you find that you don’t utilise the back of your cupboards (maybe they become the graveyard for out-of-date tin cans), you could decide to go with shallower kitchen units to free up some extra floor space in front of your cabinets. As mentioned, open shelving or glass-fronted cabinets are a popular trend and they should make the space feel more open and less boxed-in. However, if you have the capacity for it, cupboards and kitchen units that maximise the floor-to-ceiling space you have will mean you can use all of that for valuable kitchen storage. Wall or ceiling racks could be a useful solution for hanging pans and pots if you’ve run out of cupboards in which to store them. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space.
