Log home kitchen remodel after a flood (frozen pipes) left the main floor of the home in ruins. New flooring was custom milled. Custom cabinets and all new appliances were needed. The navy AGA and copper vent make statement in the largest island. The tricky part with this kind of home is the exposed log walls on the inside leave nowhere for electrical and plumbing. The remodel took traffic flow and appliance placement into consideration. The refrigerator was relocated to an area closer to the sink and out of the flow of traffic. Recessed lighting and under-cabinet lighting now flood the kitchen with warm light. The closet pantry and a half wall between the family room and kitchen were removed and a peninsular with seating area was added to provide a large work surface, storage on both sides and shelving with baskets to store homework, craft items and books. Opening this area up provided a welcoming spot for friends and family to gather when entertaining. The microwave was placed at a height that was safe and convenient for the whole family. Cabinets taken to the ceiling, large drawers, pantry roll-outs and a corner lazy susan have helped make this kitchen a pleasure to gather as a family.

Modern materials were chosen to fit the existing style of the home. Mahogany cabinets topped with Caesarstone countertops in Nougat and Raven were accented by 24×24-inch recycled porcelain tile with 1-inch glass penny round decos. Elsewhere in the kitchen, quality appliances were re-used. The oven was located in its original brick wall location. The microwave convection oven was located neatly under the island countertop. A tall pull out pantry was included to the left of the refrigerator. The island became the focus of the design. It provided the main food prep and cooking area, and helped direct traffic through the space, keeping guests comfortable on one side and cooks on the other. Large porcelain tiles clad the back side of the island to protect the surface from feet on stools and accent the surrounding surfaces.

This project started when the client moved in to their new home and realized that the builder grade cabinets would not close with their plates inside., and it developed from there. We installed new custom cherry cabinets, granite countertops, appliances, can lights, and more. We removed the built-in oven and installed a beverage center, and we used 28" lower cabinets and 20" deep upper cabinets along the wall with the refrigerator to make the full size refrigerator look counter depth.

You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces.
