Garden Retreat have been working with Mr & Mrs M with a view to installing a garden room kitchen, and the great thing about it is it sited on a beautiful terrace that has absolutely fantastic views from the New Forest across to the Isle of Wight and to site the building it will have to be craned up onto the terrace. The first part of the project will be to remove the old summerhouse and extend and level the base in readiness for the new building. This is one project we are really looking forward too……… This contemporary garden building is constructed using an external cedar clad and bitumen paper to ensure any damp is kept out of the building. The walls are constructed using a 75mm x 38mm timber frame, 50mm Celotex and a 12mm inner lining grooved ply to finish the walls. The total thickness of the walls is 100mm which lends itself to all year round use. The floor is manufactured using heavy duty bearers, 75mm Celotex and a 15mm ply floor which can either be carpeted or a vinyl floor can be installed for a hard wearing and an easily clean option. We now install a laminated floor as a standard in 4 colours, please contact us for further details. The roof is insulated and comes with an inner ply, metal roof covering, underfelt and internal spot lights. Also within the electrics pack there is consumer unit, 3 double sockets and a switch although as this particular building will be a kitchen there are 6 sockets.. We also install sockets with built in USB charging points which is very useful and this building also has external spots to light up the porch area which is now standard within the package. This particular model was supplied with one set of 1200mm wide anthracite grey uPVC multi-lock French doors and one 600mm anthracite grey uPVC sidelights which provides a modern look and lots of light. In addition, it has a 900 x 400 vent window to the left elevation for ventilation if you do not want to open the French doors. The building is designed to be modular so during the ordering process you have the opportunity to choose where you want the windows and doors to be. The client wanted a bright and functional kitchen with a custom design including a new island and a separate walk-in food pantry. All this while respecting her preference for French-Country styling and tradition decorative elements. She also wanted to add functional storage as well as increase the counter space for food prep. The whole area was too cluttered and dark, so we brightened it up with the off-white millwork, ship lapped ceiling and the gorgeous wall tiles and beadboard. The walk-in pantry is well outfitted with integrated appliances, custom deep drawers and open shelving. Materials used: Taj Mahal Quartzite stone countertops, Custom wood cabinetry lacquered with antique finish, Off white glazed subway tile backsplash, Wood butcher block counter for custom L-shaped island and walk-in pantry, Recessed wall ovens and microwave in food pantry, Heated white-oak wood floor, Panel-ready fridge and dishwasher, antique vintage glass pendant lighting, beadboard walls for open shelving in the pantry, shiplap ceilings with recessed lighting.

However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Whilst a large kitchen pantry is the dream of most homeowners, it can’t always be a reality. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Rails or small shelves along your kitchen walls or splashback can help with hanging utensils or pans, or storing small items like herbs and spices in an usually empty space.
