For this rare build, we co-remodeled with the client, an architect who came to us looking for a kitchen-expert to match the new home design. They were creating a warm, tactile, Scandi-Modern aesthetic, so we sourced organic materials and contrasted them with dark, industrial components. Simple light grey countertops and white walls were paired with thick, clean drawers and shelves and flanked slick graphite grey cabinets. The island mirrored the countertops and drawers and was married with a large, slab-legged wooden table and darker wood chairs. Finally, a slim, long hanging light echoed the graphite grey cabinets and created a line of vision that pointed to the kitchen’s large windows that displayed a lush, green exterior. Together, the space felt at once contemporary and natural.

This stunning black ply kitchen with grey-finished ply worktop was such a gorgeous, modern addition to the open living area, being a bold but beautiful touch. New appliances were fitted throughout the kitchen, including a sleek induction hob. Open ply finish units and covered storage underneath works beautifully with the black of the other cabinetry, adding small storage space and a space to display treasured books and ornaments. The dining and living areas are visible from the kitchen, with the beautiful plants, wall art and pendant light working beautifully with the kitchen finishes. The reclaimed parquet wood flooring blocks were fitted in a herringbone design, adding a stunning warm touch to the space and replacing the previous lack of flooring in this area, exposed concrete being a reminder of the extension fitted some time ago. Dulux's Brilliant White paint was used to coat the walls and ceiling, being a lovely fresh backdrop for the various furnishings, wall art and plants to be styled in the living area. Summary of Scope: gut renovation/reconfiguration of kitchen, coffee bar, mudroom, powder room, 2 kids baths, guest bath, master bath and dressing room, kids study and playroom, study/office, laundry room, restoration of windows, adding wallpapers and window treatments Background/description: The house was built in 1908, my clients are only the 3rd owners of the house. The prior owner lived there from 1940s until she died at age of 98! The old home had loads of character and charm but was in pretty bad condition and desperately needed updates. The clients purchased the home a few years ago and did some work before they moved in (roof, HVAC, electrical) but decided to live in the house for a 6 months or so before embarking on the next renovation phase. I had worked with the clients previously on the wife's office space and a few projects in a previous home including the nursery design for their first child so they reached out when they were ready to start thinking about the interior renovations. The goal was to respect and enhance the historic architecture of the home but make the spaces more functional for this couple with two small kids. Clients were open to color and some more bold/unexpected design choices. The design style is updated traditional with some eclectic elements. An early design decision was to incorporate a dark colored french range which would be the focal point of the kitchen and to do dark high gloss lacquered cabinets in the adjacent coffee bar, and we ultimately went with dark green.

Designed and Executed by Juro Design, this kitchen was completely re-imagined to create a timeless space that builds appeal and interest through layered decor elements. The final result exceeded our clients' expectations and has become a design focal point. ​Materials used: Laminex Absolute Matte Black cabinets, paired with concrete benchtops and finished off with custom solid blackbutt timber handles and feature details. The door to the pantry forms part of the cabinetry concealing it from view. We also have a custom made sliding access panel incorporated into the splashback with the benchtop following through proving functional easy access to the pantry.

Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh.
