The open concept Great Room includes the Kitchen, Breakfast, Dining, and Living spaces. The dining room is visually and physically separated by built-in shelves and a coffered ceiling. Windows and french doors open from this space into the adjacent Sunroom. The wood cabinets and trim detail present throughout the rest of the home are highlighted here, brightened by the many windows, with views to the lush back yard. The large island features a pull-out marble prep table for baking, and the counter is home to the grocery pass-through to the Mudroom / Butler's Pantry.

Remodel to a timber frame and adobe brick house originally built from a design by renowned mid-century modern architect Cliff May. We modernized the house – opening walls, bringing in light, converting a garage to a master suite and updating everything – while carefully preserving and restoring the original details of the house. Original adobe bricks, redwood timbers, and patterned tiles and other materials were salvaged and repurposed within the project. Period details such as louvered vents below the window sills were retained and repaired. The kitchen was designed to accommodate very specific wishes of the clients for ease of use and supporting their lifestyle. The original house beautifully interlocks with the landscape and the remodel furthers the indoor-outdoor relationships. New materials are simple and earthy in keeping with the original character of the house. We designed the house to be a calm retreat from the bustle of Silicon Valley. Cooking essentials are all within reach for the serious chefs in this home! Faced with a cramped eat-in kitchen our job was to both maximize and open up the space. By relocating the refrigerator and surrounding it with pantry cabinets, we were able to create more counter space and allow space for two chefs. Warm stained-wood open corner shelving was installed to display the chefs’ favorite items and keep them right at an arm's reach. The breakfast table is now positioned at the window, giving diners a view of the beautiful backyard. The finishes (Executive Cabinetry - Putnam door style in Alabaster paint; Belgian Blue Satin quartz counters by Alleanza) blend seamlessly with the rest of the home.

The exotic granite, extending to the ceiling, was the starting point for colors in the room and is a real showstopper. An open hood allows for more of the granite to be seen. Lighter hardwood floors match to the rest of the house.

The kitchen in this 1920's home was gutted and redesigned to include an island. Architectural changes I proposed were a new, larger window over the relocated sink and the relocation of the access to the basement. The L-shaped kitchen now has more storage and longer surfaces. There was just adequate room for the contrasting green island with seating on the end portion. Craftsman and Industrial elements add unique touches to the space. Simple white Shaker cabinetry allow the drama of the black quartz top, black appliances and forest green subway tile to take center-stage! Luckily, the original wood floors were patched and usable. New light fixtures and floor cloth add to the period details that make this kitchen a winner!

Victoria McHugh Photography Lakeside Custom Cabinetry,LLC Chris Hummel Construction Vogler Metalwork & Design A huge amount of functional storage space was designed into an otherwise small kitchen through the use of purpose built, custom cabinetry. The homeowner knew exactly how she wanted to organize her kitchen tools. A knife drawer was specially made to fit her collection of knives. The open shelving on the range side serves as easy access to her cookware as well as a garbage pullout. We were able to relocate and center the range and copper range hood made by Vogler Metalworks by removing a center island and replacing it with a honed black granite countertop peninsula. The subway tile backsplash on the sink wall is taken up to the soffit with the exception of dark bull nose used to frame the wall sconce made by Vaughn. The kitchen also serves as an informal entryway from the lake and exterior brick patio so the homeowners were desperate to have a way to keep shoes from being scattered on the floor. We took an awkward corner and fitted it with custom built cabinetry that housed not only the family's shoes but kitty litter, dog leashes, car keys, sun hats, and lotions.
