A tighter shot of the chimney corner reveals the microwave. Tucked back in the corner, it's modern out-of-placeness is barely noticeable. The chimney pretty much draws all the attention. Photo: Warren Smith, CMKBD, CAPS

Purchased by Piperbear in 2012 from the original owners, this 1950s Cape Cod needed a complete stylistic makeover. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was mostly removed, and the kitchen was redone with a new layout, granite countertops and new appliances; the downstairs bathroom was updated with new fixtures and period appropriate black and white hexagon tile. Upstairs, 220 feet of square footage was added by raising the roof and pushing into the dormers, creating a new full bathroom and laundry area.

The ironing board was converted to a spice cabinet, and the blind corner between the sink and dishwasher is accessed from the back of the peninsula, making the table linens easy to access from the dining room.

Kitchen in a 1926 bungalow done to my clients brief that it should look 'original' to the house. The three stars of the kitchen are the immaculately restored 1928 high-oven WEDGWOOD stove, the SubZero refrigerator/freezer disguised to look like a vintage ice-box, complete with vintage hardware, and the kitchen island, designed to reference a farm-house table with a pie-save underneath, done in ebonized oak and painted bead-board. The floor is lip-stick red Marmoleum with double inlaid black borders, the counters are honed black granite, and the cabinets, walls, and trim are painted a soft cream-color taken from a 1926 Dutch Boy paint deck. All photographs are courtesy David Duncan Livingston. (Kitchen featured in the Fall 2018 issue of AMERICAN BUNGALOW.)

This traditional kitchen remodel in a 1940's "4 square" started with the back splash. The owners saw the tile pattern on line and asked me to copy it. The space had a large closet devouring one of the corners. We removed the closet which allowed much more counter and cabinet space. Photos by Fred Sons
