This kitchen is a wheelchair accessible kitchen designed by Adam Thomas of Design Matters. With height-adjustable worktops, acrylic doors and brushed steel handles for comfortable use with impaired grip. The two Corian worktops are fully height adjustable and have raised edges on all four sides to contain hot spills and reduce the risk of injury. A single Neff oven with slideaway door, and a combination microwave oven have been specified for this kitchen. Each oven is teamed with a slimline pullout shelf that is faced with stainless steel to make it heat-resistant. This means hot items can be transferred between the hob and the oven safely, while the client's lap is completely covered and protected from hot spills. Photographs by Jonathan Smithies Photography. This new build in Battle Ground is the true definition of "modern farmhouse". Yes it's actually a modern house on a farm! The kitchen opens up to the outdoor entertaining area and has a nice open layout. The coffee bar on the side gets lots of use from all of the family members and keeps people out of the cooking area if they need to grab a cup of coffee or tea. Appliances are Miele and Fisher & Paykel. The bar-top is black Fenix.

The design of this remodel of a small two-level residence in Noe Valley reflects the owner's passion for Japanese architecture. Having decided to completely gut the interior partitions, we devised a better-arranged floor plan with traditional Japanese features, including a sunken floor pit for dining and a vocabulary of natural wood trim and casework. Vertical grain Douglas Fir takes the place of Hinoki wood traditionally used in Japan. Natural wood flooring, soft green granite and green glass backsplashes in the kitchen further develop the desired Zen aesthetic. A wall to wall window above the sunken bath/shower creates a connection to the outdoors. Privacy is provided through the use of switchable glass, which goes from opaque to clear with a flick of a switch. We used in-floor heating to eliminate the noise associated with forced-air systems.

This kitchen is a wheelchair accessible kitchen designed by Adam Thomas of Design Matters. With height-adjustable worktops, acrylic doors and brushed steel handles for comfortable use with impaired grip. The hob area is height adjustable and raised edges have been added to all four sides of all worktops to contain hot spills and reduce the risk of injury. A very large knee space has been created under the hob so that turns in and out of the space can be made with the minimum of repositioning, offering great knee access. Note the absence of trailing wires and worktop supports under worktop height. They are contained in a space behind the modesty panel and recessed into the underside of the worktop to protect knees and wheelchair footplate from dangerous snags. There are safety stops on all four edges of the rise and fall unit, including the bottom edge of the modesty panel, to protect feet. A Neff Slide and Hide oven has been specified for safer access, coupled with a slimline pullout shelf for safe transferring and lap protection. A Neff induction hob is a much safer alternative to an electric or gas hob, being easier to clean and retaining much less residual heat after use. Photographs by Jonathan Smithies Photography. We were commissioned in 2006 to refurbish and remodel a ground floor and basement maisonette within an 1840s stuccoed house in Notting Hill. From the outset, a priority was to remove various partitions and accretions that had been added over the years, in order to restore the original proportions of the two handsome ground floor rooms. The new stone fireplace and plaster cornice installed in the living room are in keeping with the period of the building.

However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
