Set within an airy contemporary extension to a lovely Georgian home, the Siatama Kitchen is our most ambitious project to date. The client, a master cook who taught English in Siatama, Japan, wanted a space that spliced together her love of Japanese detailing with a sophisticated Scandinavian approach to wood. At the centre of the deisgn is a large island, made in solid british elm, and topped with a set of lined drawers for utensils, cutlery and chefs knifes. The 4-post legs of the island conform to the 寸 (pronounced ‘sun’), an ancient Japanese measurement equal to 3cm. An undulating chevron detail articulates the lower drawers in the island, and an open-framed end, with wood worktop, provides a space for casual dining and homework. A full height pantry, with sliding doors with diagonally-wired glass, and an integrated american-style fridge freezer, give acres of storage space and allow for clutter to be shut away. A plant shelf above the pantry brings the space to life, making the most of the high ceilings and light in this lovely room.

Located on the dramatic North Cornwall coast and within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the clients for this remarkable contemporary family home shared our genuine passion for sustainability, the environment and ecology. One of the first Hempcrete block buildings in Cornwall, the dwelling’s unique approach to sustainability employs the latest technologies and philosophies whilst utilising traditional building methods and techniques. Wherever practicable the building has been designed to be ‘cement-free’ and environmentally considerate, with the overriding ambition to have the capacity to be ‘off-grid’. Wood-fibre boarding was used for the internal walls along with eco-cork insulation and render boards. Lime render and plaster throughout complete the finish. Externally, there are concrete-free substrates to all external landscaping and a natural pool surrounded by planting of native species aids the diverse ecology and environment throughout the site. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
