Berry Craig, the owner of Reclaimed Wood Creations Inc. searched the country to find the right woods to make this home a reflection of his abilities and a work of art. It started as a 50 year old metal building on a ranch, and was striped down to the red iron structure and completely transformed. Our client wanted to create a warm, homely and light-filled environment that would draw their family together. Achieving this involved extensive internal and external reconfiguration to reorganise and interconnect the family living spaces and to bring natural light, access to and views of the garden into the heart of the home. This is a recently built split-level, semi-detached property; the internal stairway received no natural lighting giving an uninviting link between each room. The family rooms were located away from the sunny garden and the office was installed in the attic, separating the family to the least appealing corners of the house for daytime activities, connected by the uninviting staircase. The south facing living room was remote from the main living spaces and had small low doors affording little view to the garden. Our intervention focussed on making the underused garden room viable and worthy as the best room in the house. In order to house the kitchen, dining and tv snug, we pushed the rear wall out and up, installing a series of full height glazed doors to the rear as well as rooflights, raising sightlines for views of the sky and garden and giving level entry to a new enclosed terrace with permanent seating, barbeque and storage. External stairs connect up to the main garden and sweep onwards back to a second family room. The living spaces, now all located to the sunny rear, flow together, with the kitchen and barbeque reinstated as the hub of family life. We added a welcoming porch and refurbished the entrance hall, highlighting the previously obscured frontage and affording immediate views from it through to the garden on entry as well as adding plenty of storage. Unable to add windows to the stair, we inserted a large rooflight and opened up the half landings to it with floor glass and mirrors. Glazed internal walls bring light from front and back at each landing, flooding the stair with natural light and giving continually repeating views to the sky and garden. The refurbishment, with beautiful, tactile and textured surfaces, layers warmth onto contemporary concrete, steel and glass to further enrich the homely ambiance in conjunction with the natural external textures visible from every space.

You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. Exposed shelving and storage is also popular for eclectic, Scandi and industrial-inspired looks, so you could opt for glass-fronted cabinets or no wall-mounted cabinets at all. Remember that this will require more restraint in what you can store and more effort in keeping it looking presentable compared to what is stored away hastily behind cupboard doors. Whilst a large kitchen pantry is the dream of most homeowners, it can’t always be a reality. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
