Extension&Remodel: New Kitchen at Heart of this South Downs National Park Home

An inviting colour palette and carefully zoned layout are key to this kitchen’s success. First, we decided to move the kitchen from a tiny room at the side of the property into a central area, previously used as a dining room, to create a space better suited to a family of five. We also extended the room to provide more space and to afford panoramic views of the garden. We wanted to develop “zoning” ideas to maximise the practicality of the room for family life and to experiment with a darker, richer palette of materials than the usual light and white, to create a welcoming, warm space. The layout is focussed around a large island, which does not include a sink or hob on its surface. This is the monolithic slab in the space, its simple design serving to amplify the beauty of the material it is made from; we chose an ultra-durable concrete-effect quartz to sweep across its top and down to the floor. The island links the other ‘components’ of the room: a distinct zone for washing up, opposite a cooking area, each fitted into niches created by structural pillars. Close to the dining table is a breakfast and drinks station, with boiling water tap, out of the way of the main working areas of the room. Working with interior designer Clare Pascoe of Pascoe Interiors, we selected clean-lined cabinetry in inky blue and dark wood, creating a rich effect offset by a smoked wood floor and natural oak and blue stools. The stronger colours add character and definition, and accentuate the role of the kitchen as the heart of the home.

This luxury bespoke kitchen is situated in a stunning family home in the leafy green London suburb of Hadley Wood. The kitchen is from the Nickleby range, a design that is synonymous with classic contemporary living. The kitchen cabinetry is handmade by Humphrey Munson’s expert team of cabinetmakers using traditional joinery techniques. The kitchen itself is flooded with natural light that pours in through the windows and bi-folding doors which gives the space a super clean, fresh and modern feel. The large kitchen island takes centre stage and is cleverly divided into distinctive areas using a mix of silestone worktop and smoked oak round worktop. The kitchen island is painted and because the client really loved the Spenlow handles we used those for this Nickleby kitchen. The double Bakersfield smart divide sink by Kohler has the Perrin & Rowe tap and a Quooker boiling hot water tap for maximum convenience. The painted cupboards are complimented by smoked oak feature accents throughout the kitchen including the two bi-folding cupboard doors either side of the range cooker, the round bar seating at the island as well as the cupboards for the integrated column refrigerator, freezer and curved pantry. The versatility of this kitchen lends itself perfectly to modern family living. There is seating at the kitchen island – a perfect spot for a mid-week meal or catching up with a friend over coffee. The kitchen is designed in an open plan format and leads into the dining area which is housed in a light and airy conservatory garden room.

This kitchen has a modern, clean and crisp look. The kitchen furniture is made from maple with integrated handles in all of the base cupboards and drawers, which are all finger jointed and on soft close runners. A Mercury oven provides a focal point and is set off by worktops of Corian. The kitchen features a built in steam oven, microwave and larder cupboard which includes racking for jams, herbs and spices. The owners of this kitchen both love gadgets and asked for all their specialist appliances to be incorporated within the given space. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. Exposed shelving and storage is also popular for eclectic, Scandi and industrial-inspired looks, so you could opt for glass-fronted cabinets or no wall-mounted cabinets at all. Remember that this will require more restraint in what you can store and more effort in keeping it looking presentable compared to what is stored away hastily behind cupboard doors. Apart from the usual fitted kitchen cupboards and drawer space, there are many other ways of keeping your kitchen tidy. Whilst a large kitchen pantry is the dream of most homeowners, it can’t always be a reality. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Rails or small shelves along your kitchen walls or splashback can help with hanging utensils or pans, or storing small items like herbs and spices in an usually empty space. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space. What sort of kitchen lighting should I go for?
